I would appreciate any suggestions in solving a really weird problem with Microsoft Word. All of a sudden it started acting very peculiar in 2 ways.1. When I use certain key combinations such as control-home to go to the top of a document it pops up with a search and replace box instead. A few other keys are acting similarly.2. A few times when I shut down MSWord it leaves the computer running at 100% CPU usage. Task Manager shows that it is Winword.exe which is using all the resources. I tried the repair option which asks for the original installation disk and then supposedly reinstalls the program. But it had no effect. I'm not a computer whiz, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful. It is only this one program that is acting weird; these same keys work fine in other programs.

If you have XP or Vista, try System Restore and go back to a day where it worked.
-
it would help me if u said what version of MS word u have
-
It's 2002.
-
Thanks sdp. I'm a little hesitant, because I upgraded a different program a day or 2 ago. But maybe I'll try it anyway.
-
I never had a problem with system restore.. it's saved me a few times

*my end post advice and suggestions are TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL, so do at your own risk, (happy rad and sdp? :-D)2002 is known to have alot of prolems and issues with its coding.i would suggest upgrading to the newest version of ms, because 2002 isnt really getting updated for bugs and issues that are small such as yours...system restore MIGHT help you, if there was just a programming error done by yourself (accidently hotkeying those specific keys to do that action instead of the one it should be doing) or the program itself is messing up.if you have windows xp, i'd suggest downloading Utorrent http://www.utorrent.com/download.phpthen go download http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3892298/Microsoft_Office_2007_Complete_Version_Incl_CD_Keyu shouldnt have any more problems after that...

I thought you could change the shortcut keys in Word, you could try and see if some of the shortcuts were changed. As for shutting it down and still seeing the 100% usage, I would try going into the Processes part of the Ctrl Alt Delete menu. Then just end the word process. If that doesn't work try restoring your computer. But make sure you have important files backed up on another drive.
-
I would completely uninstall MS Office (or Word if that's all you have) and install a clean copy.
-
he said he tried that. through restore, which is what that does.

thats what i said at the short cut keys and im almost 100% shure, but there could always be something else causing the 100% usage, but the reason thats happenin is cause its trying to update, which is what ms word typically does ever so often to update itself. since they dont really make updates for 2002, its just loading and loading taking up more cpu space from his ram sticks.the ctrl alt delete and ending the process wont fix the problem, and restoring it might not either, but then again like i said before, it might not be what im thinking it is, there are virus's that cause programs to take up all of your cpu so that you have to restart your computer leaving it vulnerable during the time its off...he could do either, buy a bigger ram stick, 1g-2g would be cool.or he could follow my advice before, which is to upgrade the msword.there are

I tried the repair option which asks for the original installation disk and then supposedly reinstalls the program No. He said the above. Note the word supposedly. Reinstalling does not always fix the problem unless it's completely uninstalled first. I'm also sure Office 2007 is a way bigger resource hog than 2002. We don't know what his computer config is so putting 2007 on can be a big mess.To the OP: trust me. Uninstall the program completely and then reinstall it first before you go though any other dramatics.

OK. This problem is getting weirder. I completely uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it, and it didn't help. Then I did it a second time. It is a complete reinstallation and still having the same problems. I'm completely stumped, because the problem keys are working correctly in my other Microsoft programs (database and spreadsheet). I'm using a Dell computer from 2002, and Word is part of Microsoft Works Suite that came with the computer. It's never had any problems.Given that the other programs are all working ok, I can't imagine why Word is having this problem.

OK.. Did you install something and then it started acting weird?

[quote=sdp]OK.. Did you install something and then it started acting weird? [/quotNo I didn't.

But you said... _I upgraded a different program a day or 2 ago. _
So you're running XP? Have you tried the "System Restore"?
-
I am running XP. I did try system restore, but I think the earliest restore point I could use was probably after this problem started. I tried some earlier ones, but it said they couldn't be used.
-
That's odd..WHat I do when things start going haywire and slow... back up all my data, reformat the drive and reinstall everything. If your computer is from 2002 then I would imagine it's pretty bogged down with a lot of crap. Things in the registry and elsewhere that you can't clean or correct. IDK what else to tell you.

Thanks SDP for trying.Actually that was done when my original hard drive died about 17 months ago. And I have run PC Tune-Up which checks the registry and other items. I maintain it well with a good anti-virus and a good firewall, scan the disk, defrag, etc. So I don't know.It may be that that is the only solution though. I'm going away for work this week, so maybe when I get back I'll try something drastic like that. Thanks

I did a search and read this: Hotkeys
I'll bet you somehow or someother program changed the Hotkey assignment so it's stuck that way for every program. Installing/reinstalling works will not change this. You chould go to something like http://www.downloads.com and find some freeware/shareware program for changing the hotkeys. This way you can find out the CTRL+HOME assignment.
