I'm rather thin just now and, I suppose, lanky as some would say. I don't want to look overdone or wide, I just want to look a bit more healthier. I was wondering what the best methods of bulking up would be?

Bulking up
-
Eat, lift big, sleep.

Eat well preferably.

lol yeah. That too. not recommended but even eating mcdonald's everyday you'll still gain muscle. There are people who use this method when eating the right foods nets them SERIOUSLY slow gains in muscle mass (lean muscle). Too be honest, I'd rather have the slow gains and minimal fat then the fast gains with tons of fat as well. So eat WELL. Protein, carbs, good fats, and find a GOOD work out regimen and you'll put on good amounts of weight (lean muscle mass).

That's why you bulk and cut. Eat like a horse and stack on the weight during Winter, then shed the fat and retain the muscle during Summer.

Very true! I was going to mention the bulk/cut stages to him...but didn't want to get that in detail.
But I'd rather bulk on 0.5 lbs of muscle to every 0.5 lbs of fat and only have to trim the 0.5 lbs of fat; rather than 1-1.5 lbs of muscle, and 3-4 lbs of fat, and have to cut that off.
btw, kmrobins, do you work out regularly? If so, what do you recommend (if any) for mass gainers? Just food or do you include protein/whey/casein shakes in your diet?

I used to work out a lot, I've gotten slack lately though. I should pick it up again. On weight gainers, I personally stick with high carb gainers. I still firmly believe most people out there get far too much protein (that which is used to build muscles) compared to carbs (that which fuels and maintains muscles). Don't be fooled into think that protein gives the same amount of energy as carbs do either. They do give the same, technically, but you must first convert the amino acids into glucose before you can harness the energy, and that takes time. Your liver can convert about 80g of protein to glucose per day, which means if you're getting 250g of protein, using 50g to rebuild muscles, converting 80g for energy, the other 120g is just going to waste. You cannot even count it in your energy intake. My powders are often... 70-80% carbs compared to protein, and I just suck them down for the extra kJ mainly. I get all my protein from fresh sources such as tuna, steak or the milk I mix it with.As for brands, it doesn't really matter. They all do the same thing. I just buy the cheapest stuff I can find, so long as I can stomach the taste.Casein protein is readily found in milk too, so I just had a monster glass of milk before bed (often with some more powder) and didn't worry about supplements.Hope that helps.

How much are you eating? I'll bet my middle testicle it's no nearly enough. Remember you need a caloric excess man. If you eat just enough to stay alive, you're not gonna gain any mass/muscle. You'll plateau on your lifts and won't go up. Eat like it's your job man.
