There's a famous psychological experiment in which volunteers are asked to answer a series of very simple multiple-choice questions. They do this in small groups: for each question, each person in the group in turn tells his/her answer to the experimenter. What the volunteers don't know is that the other members of the group are hired actors, and only the volunteer is genuine. The questions are very simple and the right answer is obvious, but the volunteer is made the last person in the group to answer, and the actors all straightfacedly give the same answer, one that is obviously wrong. What they find is that after the first one or two questions, most of the volunteers give the same answer as the actors, even though it is clearly wrong. What this shows is that people want to agree with other people and will put aside their own beliefs to do so. One form of brainwashing uses this technique - if all the people around a person say something for long enough, that person will usually believe it, because their brain accepts it as the received wisdom. This often happens without there being any intention to brainwash. Close-knit groups can often develop a received set of beliefs that aren't questioned and no-one would ever think to question. Most such beliefs are in fact true, but some may not be true. There's a more brutal form of brainwashing in which a person's self-confidence is broken down to such an extent that there is practically nothing left, and then they can be put back together mentally as dictated by the people around them, and with their beliefs. However, brainwashing by a group gradually fades when people leave the group and go into the wider world and get exposed to people with different ideas. That's why diversity of ideas and opinions is important.
