As a society, we have become cowardly, I think, Eddie.
-
As a society, we've become self absorbed assholes who's primary concern is our own state of well being, I think.

Sadly I think Scotty and you are correct. Maybe because of what I've been through, I just could not imagine not helping someone who was in trouble. I just couldn't live with myself.

How big was the town in which this took place?I'm wondering if peoples lack of getting involved has to do with urbanization. In urban settings people tend not to help a.) because they don't know you and more than likely won't and b.) because they tend to think the next guy will stop and take care of it, so they don't need to get involved. It's a pretty well founded trait of human nature that the more people there are around the less likely any one individual is to offer assistance.Beyond that being in a car that's passing by, people feel less a part of anything going on that they're witnessing. In a car what's going on outside is viewed through a screen, rather like watching tv, thus making people feel even more removed from the situation and even less likely, still, to get involved.

It happened in the town where I grew up. At the time the population was probably somewhere around 6k. So it's not very large by any means. It's one of those towns where most people know everyone. Matter-of-fact the boy who almost got charged with attempted murder was the son of one of my father's best-friends growing up.
