Love apples and thought this article did a pretty good job of expressing one of the great benefits to eating apples besides their great taste! In Ohio I love this time of the year because the local farmers start selling their locally grown apples. My favorite by far are the Melrose Apples (which happens to be the Ohio state apple :))I did learn one thing from the article, which was the anti-bacterial effect of the apple's juice. Thought that was very neat.

I rather suspect it might be apples and not oranges or bananas because the saying derives from a time and place when warm-weather fruit like oranges and bananas were not practically available to the common people. :smile:
(Apparently first found as a Welsh folk proverb in 1866: "Eat an apple on going to bed,/ And you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread." The modern form is said to have been used by J.T. Stinson in 1904 in an address to the St Louis Exposition. I don't know how available oranges might have been in St Louis in 1904, but they certainly would have been prohibitively expensive in Wales in 1866.)
