Okay, just because I don't like it when phone companies try and rip everyone off, and because my mum and I got my dad an iPod touch for chrimbo, I figured it wouldn't be to hard to get Skype working on there... and I have to say: How right I was, and I'd just like to share that information with people, because it means you can get free calls in any wi-fi hot zone off a touch, or if you're using an iPhone, as long as you got a free data package (which comes with the majority of the contracts available from o2 at least, not sure about worldwide regions here)Anyway, here's what I figured out, most of us tech heads have a skype account anyway for when we're at our desk, so I was hoping that something would be available in the Apps store that would help people out (after all, Steve Jobs knows how to turn a profit) and lo and behold, I found a little App (which is free I might add) called "Fring" if you go to the apps store, you can download it, and for iPhone users, it's useable right out of the box!For iPod touh users, if you have a second Gen Touch (the one with the speaker on the bottom, and the solid state hard drive) then it's pretty simple, you get something akin to these from Apple: (UK Link) http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MA814LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MA&mco=MjM2OTAwMA (US Link) http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA814LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MA&mco=MjM2OTAwMA ... any approved headset will work, but this is the best VFM wise in my humble opinion, and voila, if you're in a wi-fi hot zone, sign into Fring (which you hafta associate with your skype account... which incidently takes about 10 seconds, so it's not exactly hard work) and you have access to your usual cheapy skype out calls, or free skype > skype calls For some reason, the 1st Gen Touch doesn't support the headset, so you have to buy a microphone dongle (easily available on the net, but I suggest you google the ones you can mod first, and see how happy you are with modding, because some of them require a bit of soldering work) ... some places on the net now sell pre-modded mic's for the first gen touch, but you should really check them out before purchasing, wouldn't wanna buy from a "fly by night" corporation that's gonna vanish with your cashola! For people who use other chat programs: all of the major ones are covered in Fring, so yes, you can associate it with MSN/Yahoo/AIM etc and it'll still work for free calls!Just thought I'd let you all know ... after all, someone told me there's a credit crunch on so why not use legit apps to get free/cheaper phone calls eh ... so, to quote Homer Simpson:Woo Hoo!
