Okidokey, a very brief back story here: last may, I was in a car accident which has messed my back up to the point where some days I can barely stand up I'm in so much pain, though it is getting better with physio...Though, the reality is, while I've been on physio and seeing the docs, I haven't really been able to do very much phys, which is annoying me as I'd gotten my weight below obese for the first time in years... now, i'm back up there in the obese side of life, so I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on isolating the back out of exercising? As the majority of exercises, whether realising this or not require the back :SI know swimming is good, and I've been trying to swim where I can, but apart from that... really, it's just annoying that I'm a fatty boom boom again after so much hard work :S ... anyone reckon I can get lipo off the insurance??? lmao!!

I don't know the extent of your injuries, but if you have proper form, the majority of excercises shouldnt be too stressful. you could get on the stationary bike with full chairs those arent to hard on your back and get you going. For excercises, i would just say see what works for you. Stay away from some leg excercises as they do put stress on the back. Make sure you lift weights properly too.

Speak to your physio. My back is messed up too, although no where near as badly as yours. One thing I do know about your back though is it is an immensely complex group of muscles, I wouldn't do anything without asking your physio. You'll find most exercises will still include your back, if only slightly, and it may hinder your healing.
On the weight loss side of things, why don't you just diet? It is honestly the easiest and most effective way to lose weight. You can either eat healthier, or just cut your portion size down. We already know you're eating too much: you're putting on weight! So why not just throw (yes, it's a waste, but you don't need it!) 10-20% of all your meals and snacks in the bin before you start eating them. You may get hungry, but it's largely physiological. Within a month I promise you your body will have adjusted to the smaller intake.

I'd say my "meal portions" are probably to big, as you say... however I don't snack between meals, which I think is where I fall down... my calorie intake is roughly between 1800 - 2000 a day, where the recommended is 2500Admittedly, I used to go waaaaaay over that before I started phys again properly (so about 2 years ago now) but I very very rarely go over that now... I think ideally, I need to do the six small meals a day thing to lose the weight really, which I will be starting on next friday methinks ... I know excuses for reasoning for and against a set date are pointless to start, cuz I should just start today, but I do have a multitude of reasons for saying next friday which aren't really something to be getting into on this post... not yet anyway I'll also be doing swimming regularly from next Friday and I'm gonna try and be ready for some light impact stuff by then, cuz my backs already well on the mend again, the pain I had on sunday has subsided to the point where I can move around without hurting myself to much again, it's just considerably worse than it was this time last week :SI know about the muscles, cuz I've tried just about everything to isolate the area without much success, I just wondered if anyone had any ideas... of course you're right to speak to my physio, which I will be doing again on friday this week One thing I can say though... for anyone who's been watching this year's Top Gear; I totally agree with Clarkson... Audi drivers are all cocks! If it weren't for an Audi driver, my back would be fine!!!And to top it off, despite it being repaired by my insurance company, my car has actually committed suicide (just before chrimbo) in the form of one of the cogs in the gearbox deciding to shatter and ruining the whole thing... bugger! Still, someone's interested in buying it, so hopefully I'll still sell it, just at a vastly reduced price :SAnyway... rant over... time for the smiles again now... mmmm, NZ this time next friday
