Ok, just a qeustion to see what you guys think. So my friend is an extreme liberal, yet he is kinda obsessed with the idea of anarchy. Don't they completely contradict themselves?? Wouldn't a conservative republican be considered more of a anarchists since they believe in less government regulated functions and less government power in general? just a thought/question.

I think it illustrates the problem of reducing political philosophy to a single dimension of left versus right. Many thinkers find it helpful to add a second dimension of authoritarianism versus libertarianism, giving a chart like this one. You can even take a test to see where you fit on it at http://politicalcompass.org/ . Of course this two-dimensional model is still only an approximation.
On this basis, anarchism is a sort of libertarianism of the left, while small-government conservatism is a libertarianism of the right.
There is more discussion, with alternate models, here.

For all of you who think you know me and my politics and would like to put me in a box with (ahem) certain other posters (ahem), you should know that my score on the site Ineligible posted is 1.00 on the economic left/right, and 0.31 on the Social Libertarian/Authoritarian. Which means I'm only one short block from dead center. So yeah...neener neener! All your talk of being rational and centrist and tolerant and not being extreme...I WIN!! Good post and good links!

Good heavens, thor, it says you're a leftist. That is indeed surprising.Of course, where the centre is considered to be is rather arbitrary. Policies considered centrist in Europe would be considered on the left in the US. A government that would be considered in the middle of the authoritarian-libertarian scale in Europe and the US would be considered libertarian in Asia. Even within the West, the role of government has increased over the last few centuries, and this could be considered as a general drift to the left. Paying government money to people who are unemployed, for example, would once have been considered a loony left radical idea.

I thought this was the reason they included, based on the questions, where specific famous people lay in those grids. that way you can compare yourself to them based on results, rather than just say Im left or right or a fucking commie.
