'A lovely couple', admits downheartened bird wardenBy Lester Haines • Get more from this authorPosted in Biology, 10th March 2009 16:27 GMTFree whitepaper – Virtualization: optimized power and cooling to maximize benefitsA couple of male blue ducks have pretty well done for hopes that the species might propagate in the UK after eschewing the advances of a female in favour of some light boy-on-boy, the Telegraph reports. The pair of gay drakes - named Ben and Jerry - resisted the advances of female Cherry at Arundel Wetland Centre in West Sussex and came out of the avine closet to form a close partnership. Centre warden Paul Stevens said: "They stay together all the time, parading up and down their enclosure and whistling to each other as a male might do with a female he wants to mate with. People who visit the centre think they're a fantastic couple, without really coming around to the idea that they are two males."According to Stevens, Cherry has taken the snub pretty well and "doesn't seem bothered by it, she's just happy to keep herself to herself".The centre had hoped that the blue ducks - natives of New Zealand and represented by just three individuals in the UK - would get it together, and Stevens explained that after she was introduced to Ben, Cherry "showed some interest in him" then "displayed typical mating behaviour".He elaborated: "She approached him and called to him, she even looked like she was nesting. We thought it was great and it was all going to happen but nothing ever did."In the correct spirit of tolerance that these enlightened times require, Stevens concluded: "To our surprise the two males really took to each other and it was obvious that they really liked each other. It would have been nice to get a last clutch of eggs from Cherry, but Ben and Jerry do make a lovely couple." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/10/bloke_duck_mounting/

Trying to get your thread back on track...So are you saying that since homosexuality occurs naturally among other species is should be seen as okay among our species? It's natural for some mammals to kill their young, such as lions.

Mmmm I dunno if I will go that far... though it has its point. It was just another point of evidence that homosexuality appears even in the animal kingdom not just humans. It gives more evidence that homosexuality is genetic and "natural" not a choice or environmental.

I thought most modern (a relative term) people who hold homosexuality as wrong accept that it may be genetic but say that doesn't matter. Don't the claim that God gives all people hurtles to jump and crosses to bare and sin to avoid and that homosexuality is just one of those some people have to deal with? Something akin to someone born into abject poverty has to deal with his circumstances. That being that just because he's poor and hungry it doesn't make it okay for him to steal from others.

Or could it be the prejudice people have against homosexuals be the true hurdle for people to get over? hmmmmmm...

Toche`... tocha... tosha... to...You make a good point.

We do a bit of amateur bird breeding and gay couples are actually pretty common, both boys and girls.

Only by your logic, thor.

I heard an interview with the main guy from the sanctuary today on CBC Radio 1He described the behavior as being not sexual in any way. Apperently it's quite normal for 2 drakes to team up to protect a territory (most commonly brothers). The drakes will coopperate until a female arrives on the scene, then the more traditional rivalry behavior occurs until one drake in driven off (note even more parallels to humans)It would seem the whole "gay duck" thing was a bit of a media hype.Obviously, there is no denying that homosexual behavior occurs naturally in many animal species, it just wasn't the case with Ben and Jerry
