The song by Patti Smith from the 1978 album, "Easter"I KNOW I shouldn't read any comments on youtube, ever. It's often the place for the smallest minds on the planet to express their lack of understanding of anything. It seems though that people who probably weren't even born when she wrote the song think it should never be played or the name should be changed. The song is not about race. All one must do is listen to it to understand it. But there are all these little minds out there that focus on the one word rather than the context. It reminds me of this Larson comic bla bla bla nigger bla bla bla bla Why does it piss me off so much? I don't know but it seems like people are so sensitive to a single word that they are missing the social commentary. Not to mention that Patti's usage of the word, nigger, is far from derogatory. But maybe the intellectual grasp of the language is beyond some people. Maybe George Carlin should have added that extra word to the list... shit piss fuck cunt cocksucker motherfucker & tits

Rock n Roll Nigger

good morning everyone... feeling much calmer today
I'm going to see if I can find a copy of Easter, I think I owe it to Patti to buy it instead of just d/l it
Rock on! -
You have to remember the context the word is usually used in, and how it is still often used. When some people hear that word, they don't conger of fond memories or stories. I did listen to the song, I understand what she's saying. Just remember this word has a history and is not a positive one. It not easy to take this word and give it a new meaning. I feel leave the word as it is (negative definitions and all) and let the users, past and present, have it. It's people that need to change.

yes
The language stops dead, never to change."the context the word is usually used in"
of course you mean to say "the context in which the word is usually used"
"they don't conger of fond memories or stories"
of course you mean to say "she doesn't intend to conjure" or possibly "she doesn't intend to invoke fond memories or stories"
I'm sure, as you express your command of the language and its accepted usages, you speak from a position of authority.

Alot of people have a similar problem understanding the point of the John lennon and Yoko Ono song "Woman is the Nigger of the World".

I forgot about that one, thanks

It really is a sad thing. When there are songs that have the same message, but different words, whether they be deragotory in nature or not, it's remains to be the Larson effect, I think.Lots of art gets stifled becuase of this, and it's a terrible shame.I like it! Gotta check and see if Zune Marketplace has it!

misuse and misrepresentation of words, symbols and even belief structures has always diminished them. After all, the swastika had a 10000 year history before that little shit, Hitler ruined it for everyone.

I didn't proof read. I was stating my opinion, I never tried to be an expert or an authority of the matter. What were you looking for? Is there something wrong with that? Was it not what you wanted?
