Most college applications ask for both parents income, and the number of people living in your home. I'm applying to financial aid(not now but soon after i send in my college applications), and my school counselor told me when filling out financial aid, i should only include my mothers income so that i can get a better deal. I do live with both my parents and they are together, but technically they aren't married, and they don't do their taxes together. So since i'm doing this for financial aid, i'm going to do it from the beginning on college apps, and only include my mother's income in it.Basically, my question is, is there a way that they can tell that my parents do live together? Technically, this isn't lying, it's just not including my dad. The only reason i was told to do this was because i was denied reduced lunch at school since my dad's income is above average, but my mom's is below average, and we also have a lot of bills, mortgage and stuff and i'm just afraid that i will also be denied financial aid, even though i do need it. I'm also a Latino.

Financial aid and college applications..

I suspect that questions will be asked about your father. Even in a divorce situation, both parents are expected to contribute.
-
Do you know if when applying for financial aid, they look at your college apps? For example, if i were to include both my parent in a college application, and their incomes, but then when applying for financial aid, i don't include my father, will they somehow be able to see this? And also what proof do you have to send in?

Dad's Jones, and I'm Jones and mom is Smith, and i live in NY

Quote:
Is Mom Smith, Dad Jones and you Jones?
LMAO... if you change the Mom and Dad names around it would be mine and Shannon's names. hahaha
sorry.. i made a random outburst. but i thought it was funny. -
If you give false information on the application form it amounts to fraud, and if they find out they can not only take the money back, but also file criminal charges.
-
But it's not exactly false information, it's just not including my father...and my counselor said..
-
It depends what they ask you. If they ask for "total parental income" or something like that, then they are obviously asking for the total income of both parents. If you do something illegal, saying it's because your counsellor told you to do it would not be a defence, though it could reduce the punishment.
-
Well the SUNY application asks to put the name of only one parent, but the total family income and people in your family. But i just realized this is probably for EOP..

It's best to just be honest. Fraud is fraud. You could find yourself without any aid, facing criminal charges, and kicked out of school. Generally the admissions and financial aid departments are connected. You should expect them to see the information on both your application for admission and your application for financial aid. There's really lots of financial aid out there unless the total family income is extremely high in which case why are you even considering an aid request?
