Back in the 80's, when I was about 5, I remember going to a doctor repeatedly for some kind of problem with my labia or hymen. In doing research, I think it was an imperforated hymen. But here is the thing - using his hands, he would pull/tear it apart while I lay on his table - no anesthesia that I recall. It was very painful and very scary for me - esp since it would heal and my mom made me go back to have the same thing done over and over. Finally a different doc said to leave it and see if I had any probs at puberty. I didn't - it cleared up on its own. Now, the standard treatment is to let it be until puberty and then pursue surgery if there is a problem. So, why in the world did this doctor hurt me over and over? My mom said it was standard practice - but I can't believe that. Was that really standard? Or was it a bad doc???

Welcome to A2A, swimtwin.I don't know the answer to your question, but it could be a bit of both. The dentist I was taken to when I was a child not only did more fillings than would be considered good practice now, but he did it without anaesthetic. In those days (earlier than the 80s) it was apparently quite common to consider that children could take more pain than adults. Nevertheless I think my childhood dentist was a bad one, and I found a great improvement when I got my own dentist.
