I wouldn't recommend trying to remove the bumps. It's likely to make things worse.
1 mm bumps are usually sebaceous glands that are normal and have always been there. But these have recently appeared and are larger, so folliculitis (inflamed follicles, usually due to infection--ordinary zits are an example) is very possible. The type of infection in folliculitis can be bacterial (most common) or fungal or viral, which may require different treatment.
As you have noted, mollusum is also possible, and can usually be recognised by a dimple in the middle of the bumps.
