I've noticed (mostly when I'm trying to get to bed) that my heart beats really quickly and I get shortness of breath alot of times during the day. On occasions I find my hands shaking for no apparent reason. I don't have too much caffeine and I'm not a smoker. I'm turning 16 in a couple months. Any ideas?

Rapid Heart Beat

have you been getting or have had ear ache lately?
-
Thanks for the reply.I had a couple days about a month ago where I had earaches. For the last couple days it's felt like my left ear is plugged as if I were in a high altitude. How does it relate?
-
It's interesting to find out anxiety and tension can cause such symptoms.
I do. But just as much as the next person. Nothing too bad.
-
Please ignore the comment of anxiety and depression.
To me it sounds like a heart condition called SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia).
Having ear ache or "blocked" ears is a very classic sign for this condition.
PLEASE go and see your doctor and mention SVT.
If is continues for longer than 5 minutes, or become out of breath as well, call for an ambulance immediately.
There are many drugs on the market for people with SVT, and it is very common in all age groups (fit and unfit people). Beta-blockers or most commonly used in the treatment, and affects usually sub-side with ongoing treatment.
-
#1, please be VERY careful when mentioning to people that they may have anxiety or depression if information could possibly lead to other causes. SVT can become VERY serious if left undiagnosed, if someone just puts it down to anxiety “panic attacks”.
-
The cause of the earaches is irritation from the nerves coming up from the heart, also with the increased heart rate. Other common effects I have seen is jaw-ache and a feeling of pressure from behind the eyes.
Anyone within the medical profession would recognise these symptoms and come to the same conclusion with the information provided (have also phoned my friend who's a paramedic/e.c.p. and he came to the same conclusion immediately).
It pisses myself and other people off with your diagnosis for 90% of aliments on this board are "oh it's anxiety or possibly depression" and your "I just want to be heard" idea of posting is ridiculous and at times very dangerous and even incorrect.
In the 2 years I have been working alongside the ambulance service, I have seen over 30 patients suffering with SVT (including a close friend who I diagnosed 2 weeks prior to her going to the doctors and actually having it properly diagnosed, and also my grandfather who wouldn't come out of SVT even with drug therapy (and ended up having external defibrillation).
WeirdGirly,
As I said above, to me it sounds like SVT, NOT anxiety, depression or tension
In this day and age there are many many treatments for it with no real impact for day to day living. And what have you got to loose making a trip to the doc?

I think Diver is generalizing, when he is referring to "others", but you have to be careful when a person might have a condition that is serious. You blew it off as anxiety and that person could think "Oh, is that all? No problem then." That's the problem with sites like this. People want to try to help, but could in the end cause harm. We are not doctors. Diver has a lot more experience in the medical field than you do, so you shouldn't really even be questioning him just because you can't find it on the internet.

Sorry but I have just got to pick at one thing. In reply to:I honestly don't think you should be filling her head with the possibility of her having a heart problem.and what is the title and topic of the thread?
-
At no point did I ever say I had the answer... all I said is it "sounds like SVT to me and that she should PLEASE go to the doc and mention it" (knowing fully well I you can not fully diagnose someone with something online!).I may only have 2 years experience within the ambulance service, but I have been taught by doctors, paramedics and e.c.p's, with years of experience behind them.

If your head is pounding it might be from anxiety.

In reply to:
I won't give people advice or answers anymore. Maybe that will make some people on this board happy
Let me start off the count with 1.

First off, thanks no1sexpotinusa for your suggestion. Atleast you put an effort to try and help me narrow down what I may or may not have.Diver, this condition you speak of - is there any specific site I can check out for more information? What's the life expectancy for having this? I'd say I've noticed these symptoms for about 4 months or so.I'll read up on it tonight. I already talked to my parents about my symptoms and they're scheduling an appointment. My father is convinced it's asthma. And you're right, I've got nothing to lose if it turns out to be nothing. Thanks again.

Realistically, the life expectancy for anyone with SVT is as good as anyone else’s. For a lot of people, a slight diet change is only required. Or in “younger people” they can quite literally “grow out of it”.To be honest with you, it could be any number or aliments. And without having further advanced information (24hr observation with a 12-lead ECG, blood pressure results (average during the day and during an episode), exact heart rate during an episode, blood tests etc really it is impossible to say). I will say that it can also be very hard to diagnose with a patient is coming in and out of SVT, the only SURE way of actually knowing that someone is experiencing this condition is to actually see them in it.WebMD – the usual choice to have a quick read.Patient.co.uk – actually has some very good information on the causes and treatmentNHS Direct – has a few good bits of informationReally, a quick search on google will bring up thousands of results.Good luck with the doc’s, and let us know how you got on.

good luck with the doc.

Today must have been one of the worst days of my life. And it has to do with what I've posted about.
I came back from school, all was normal and well. I was fine till about 3:30pm when I got in an arguement with my parents. I ended up crying about something and in the midst of all this I began struggling with breathing, I became extremely light headed, I started shaking violently and my heart sped up really badly. I rushed to the emergency room and by then I felt better, infact I felt nothing at all except a slight and very dull complication in breathing. I got my pulse, it was normal, I got my blood pressure, it was normal. I had an xray of my lungs taken, they were fine. I had this type of test where stickers are put on your body and they measure the electric activity of the heart, that was normal too. The doctor said I probably suffer from an anxiety disorder and deal with alot of stress. Which I do. And you do state that the blood pressure is averaged on a day of an attack, and the blood pressure was fine. Or did I just completely misunderstand you?
Yet, once I left the emergency room my heart still hurt a bit. My breathing still discomforting. Which is the state I am now. I'm seeing my doctor on Monday to give me a standard checkup.
If someone is struggling with SVT or any other condition is it only detectable during an attack?
What do you guys think of all this? Does it really seem like anxiety? According to http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/mosby_factsheets/anxiety.html I have many of the symptoms. I've had enough help, but any more would be well appreciated. Thank you so much.

I'm going down to the driving range with my doc soon; I'll print it out and see what he thinks.I did find this in one of my books today: [The only way to diagnose SVT is by recording a fast heart rhythm consistent with SVT on a cardiac monitor during an attack.] 21st Edition - Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses. And find this... it has an excellent video that you can watch as well:http://www.heartcenteronline.com/myheartdr/common/articles.cfm?ARTID=420

okay... just come back. He seems to think that is sounds like "Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia" (something else that's new I've learnt today (that and I'm really crap at golf!)).I did a quick search and came up with this, although VERY similar (and closely linked to SVT (including panic attacks)) it has a lot more of the characteristics that you are showing healthAtoZ.Did they put you on beta-blockers or something similar for the time being (even to help with what they may expect?).

oh and lol... you owe me 2 cans of beer... it's what it cost me to get the info out of him!

In reply to: you owe me 2 cans of beer No you don't! He can't have beer.
