I just thought my 2 cents might be interesting to people.I've had a few psycological problems in my life. Mostly depression, but recently Ive been affected by nervous anxiety disorder which in my opinion is worse.Anyway every time I've been to see someone about my problems the answer has been the same. They want you to go on prescription medication. I've been on prozac, and have been offered lithim, beta blockers and temezepam.Although this may seem like a good "quick fix" my advice to anyone affected by anxiety or depression is that the only real solution can come from inside yourself. Drugs don't solve the problem, they only treat the symptoms. The best thing you can do is be positive and realise that you will get through this in time Whenever I've had problems I've just spent time with my good friends and kept busy and I've bounced out of it in a couple of weeks. You have to own your feelings and stop them from owning you. Drugs just make you develop a dependency and suddenly whoops! You're not just ill, you're also a drug addict. Stay away from them and just remember: You're going to be okay All the best

medication works for a lot of people, sometimes you can do everything to try to solve "inside problems" but that's not going to fix the chemical imbalance in your brain, depression doesn't just come and go, once you're diagnosed with it you suffer from it the rest of your life

I am on medication but I'm also in therapy. I think having the combination is what helps me. I get to work out my "inner" problems and the medication prevents me from breaking down into crying spells all the time. It also helps me sleep b/c without it I'm just a walking zombie from lack of sleep.

I'm with you Amanda - depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and the only way to fix that is through medication.
I'm definately pro-meds. In my case anyway, being on the medication helped stabilise me enough to deal with my isssues. But hey, that's just me

I'm sorry but i can't agree. Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, you simple CAN'T produce enough 'good' stuff to counteract the 'bad' stuff, this is where medication helps......
..........it enables you to get to some kinda balance, where you can then feel better, and it goes on from there, the more postive you feel, the better you are, the more positive you feel etc etc
I wouldn't be the person i am now if i hadnt' taken the medication - and I am really glad I am who I am  -
I believe that there are 2 causes for depression/anxiety.One - chemical imbalance. Two - "inside feelings"........Some of us - it is truly a chemical imbalance. Some of us - it's truly some "feelings". I think they should do a test of some sort to determine if there IS a chemical imbalance. Standard - before prescribing drugs. That way - if it's not - they can get the counseling they need. If it IS a physical thing - chemical thing - then the drugs are the right way to go - if not - then NO DRUGS. Seems simple to me. My doctor wanted to put me on all sorts of nice pills.. but until he can prove to me that I have a chemical imbalance, I'm not taking them. But - that's just me.

In reply to:One - chemical imbalance. Two - "inside feelings"........ wrong - there is a thrid option - a combo of both. i know this b/c when i only have the first i can manage - but when number two comes in - i have to have meds. my ex was agianst my going on them until i told him that i knew how many sleeping pills i'd need to take to not wake up the next morning. then he agreed that i needed to be on meds. and i have been on them everyday since - and will be for the rest of my life. some ppl just need meds to function in everyday life.
