When running, the ball of your foot should land first, and then the rest of your foot. This will help in preventing foot/ankle/shin problems that can come from running, and your step should be quieter. As far as pacing goes, it's just something you'll have to learn. Where do you run? I find that I can push myself much more easily when running outside to a certain destination and back than I can running circles on a track. In my case, it hurts by the time I've finished running and I'm dead, if I'm doing a hard training day or running a race. Right now, just take it easy for long runs and try to build your stamina, and raise the speed, not the distance after that (if you're going a decent distance that is). Try to go for at least 3k (approx. 2 miles). If you're running many times a week and really pushing the pace then that should be ok. If not, then you need to increase the distance and try doing a couple long hard runs that really get you tired out. Trust me, doing that for awhile will build your endurance.

The part of the foot just behind the toes.
