For weight loss, weightlifting will do nothing. You have to do long hard cardio to get good results if that's your goal. Eating right is another huge factor. Cut out all or next to all junk, and eat leaner foods. Avoid all sugary drinks, and be sure to get lots of fluids. Eat many smaller snacks and meals during the day, and don't eat too much in any one sitting. Don't be eating many processed foods as they're often high in fat (not all, but many). Get your higher energy foods in the morning, and avoid them in the evening or at night. As far as the exercise goes, push yourself. Try going out and just running as far as you can before having to stop and walk. Then, set a goal to run a certain distance after that that is slightly longer than what you just ran. Make yourself run it. Do that a few times, then increase the distance. It's hard to say how far you should be running since I'm not sure what your ability is. I run anywhere from 3k on a short run to 12k, but I generally stick with 5-8k. (1.6 kilometers = 1 mile)After you've met your goal, try doing some weightlifting and do lots of work on the midsection of your body. This'll help tone it up a bit if you stick with it. But for now, running, biking, whatever works for you. And eat right, that's extremely important.
