Hi everyone, Thanks for taking the time out to read this,I found out today that one of my friends, I’ll call her T, is what appears to be manic depression, and that she has been self harming for a while now. I only found this out from a friend; I’ll call her S, who she had told in confidence. Whilst I know that it is not my place to get involved, I want to try and help S by giving her some advice that can help her to help T. I want any ideas that I can pass on to her for whilst I have self harmed my self, anything would be useful. The problem with T is that she has low self esteem and feels the need to put a front on. I am just getting more and more worried for her because lately she has become mixed pup with drugs, has become a ‘social’ smoker, and often gets completely drunk when she is not at home. I want some ideas that will help her, so that she will no longer feel the need to go to such lengths to escape from the real world. Thanks.Mors_mortis

Thanks for the reply, but I am not sure that you understood what I was asking. My friend does suffer from bouts of happiness followed my depression. The ideas that I want are ways that she can take her mind off things, because ,whist obviously, she should give up self harming, drinking and drugs, we all know that it is not as easy as that. It also makes it harder in that I am not meant to know about this, more than can make through guess work. I can’t let her know that I know. Have you any ideas off subtle ways that I can help her to boost her self esteem, as I know that that is what she finds the most depressing, e.g. taking her to do something that she has always wanted to do?Thanks again.

There's nothing magic, but talking to her and being there for her when she is down are helpful.
