Since it's made for flu/cold-like symptoms, I was wondering if it's okay to take Tylenol PM just as a sleeping pill if you are not feeling any symptoms.
-
Use of Tylenol PM only for sleep?
-
You can take it...but don't let it become a regular habit.
-
If you're not feeling any symptoms its usefulness as a sleeping pill is very limited.
-
you can take tylenol pm for a sleeping aid, but if you take it regularly, and try to sleep with out it, its hard. i have a habit of taking it like that, and so it really sucks.

Well, lets see if I can set a few things out here for you all to understand.
First of all, the active ingredient in Tylenol PM is benedryl (diphenhidramine hcl). You cannot become addicted to it and it is harmless. Unless you take handfuls at one time that is...
Second of all, it is really unnecessary to use the tylenol component of it if you don't have a headache or whatever. Simplify the formula and just buy straight benadryl or generic diphenhydramine.
I used to work night shift and used it all the time. I would take as much as 75 mg at a time and it works great with not a lot of side effects.
It is so safe we give it to pregnant people for crying out loud....

You SOUND knowledgeable but unfortunately your wrong!Regular use of Tylenol PM causes liver damage and even failure. It's actually referred to as acetaminophen toxicity.. the body cannot process acetaminophen quickly enough, resulting in dangerous depletion of the level of glutathione in the liver. So taking even a regular dose of Tylenol once a day, for too many days, can be really dangerous!
-
Taking tylenol too often can also make it useless in the future when you actually have a cold. I don't know if it's just a theory or not, but it makes sense to me.

Building resistance to Tylenol is a fantasy, unless you can point to literature beyond your gut feeling. You don't build up a resistance to everything. And a single dose of tylenol won't destroy your liver. It can cause damage if you have underlying liver disease, or wash it down with a bottle of vodka. In fact, washing down a bottle of Tylenol with a fifth of vodka is a really horrible way to commit suicide, but I digress.I agree that chronic use of Tylenol is not a good idea. It's an even worse idea for children, since the effective dose is so close to the toxic dose. And if you have a headache every night, you'd better get checked out by your doctor. But dlvryrn is correct: generic Benadryl is commonly used as a sleep aid. A dose will put me out for ten hours...and I'm not usually that sensitive to drugs.

Yea u can get addicted to Benadryls. I got hooked on them though my teen years. I dont know why i took them, i guess cause they made me sleepy and it made me not eat as much.
