Hi, lately ive been realsing gas more than often.... See I dont know really why. I got concerned because I read an article saying an average person realeases gas like 14 times a day and 20 times a day isnt normal. And Im pretty sure ive farted more than 20 times. WELL i quickly looked back at the foods I eat and my diet hasnt really changed. THen suddenly i looked at my jar of sour gummy bears i bought a few days ago, and discovered it said on the label: "1.5grams of sorbitol per 30 grams of gummies". I spent a few mintues researching wut sorbitol was and found out sorbitol was sugar that can upset your stomach and possibly cause some gas. Now, ive only had about 5 gummy bears + ive been having gas all day. Could this be because of 5 little gummy bears? or some other kind of problem?

Sorbitol attack?

It could well be the cause. Sorbitol is a sweetener that is doesn't make you fat and is safe for diabetics, and the reason is that your body can't absorb it. It doesn't get digested, and goes right through you unchanged. If you eat a lot you'll get diarrhoea because its osmotic effect absorbs water. More to the point here, some intestinal microorganisms can feed on it and produce gas.BTW, people vary a lot in what microorganisms they have in their intestines. Apparently the main gas in some people is methane, but in others it's hydrogen, because of different microorganisms. Nitrogen is also a common constituent, and that is derived from another common source of gas - swallowing air. Some people swallow a lot more air when eating and drinking than others do. The oxygen is absorbed, but air is 80% nitrogen, and when that reaches the intestine there's only one way out.
