TruthOrFiction.com says: Martin Luther King plagiarized his famous "I Have a Dream" speech -- Disputed!.
-
RIP da pope
-
I know it was never 100% of the speach. I've heard both recordings side by side and it totally floored me.
-
snopes.com says: The claim that Martin Luther King "stole" his famous "I Have a Dream" speech from black pastor Archibald Carey is largely overblown.
But he seemed to have an issue with plagiarism.
-
I just found it interesting that such a famous speach had a few borrowed bits and paraphrases. Again, it doesn't dimminish it's historical importance.

Thoughts on a successor...Cardinal Francis Arinze. would be the first black pope in modern times (since the 5th century actually). I'd like to see that but he is ultra conservative. In a commencement speach at U of Georgetown Called Family under Seige he said "It is opposed by an anti-life mentality as is seen in contraception, abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. It is scorned and banalized by pornography, desecrated by fornication and adultery, mocked by homosexuality, sabotaged by irregular unions and cut in two by divorce." eeesh!Cardinal Marc Ouellet. Canadian!! woo hoo. He might be concidered a bit too young but I think that's a good thing.Cardinal Godfried Danneels. he was wise and progressive enough to come out in favour of condom use, not for contraception but simply as a matter of public health. very courageous. These guys just kind of stick out in my mind.

Funny thing happened Monday morning. My brother called me very concerned. He asked me how much I knew about Catholic theology. I told him I knew a bit. He was very concerned about the Pope. He really admired the pope but didn't understand enough about Catholic theology to know if the pope was going to heaven or not, according to his theology. I assured him that the Catholic church's view on salvation was very much like his own. I assured him that he would see Mother Theresa in heaven and most likely John Paul II. I thought it was kind of cool to see that sensitive side of him. I also liked hearing that he admired John Paul that much.
-
sure would be funny if he got there and god was smoking a cigar and getting a massage "woah dude, did you guys ever miss the point!"
-
I think Francis Arinze would be a natural successor to John Paul II. Charismatic, very conservative, and would be great for increasing the size of the Church in Africa. In any case, the Catholic church is on its way out in the U.S...it's already out in Western Europe. There's no possible way that Godfried Danneels will get the nod (or smoke puff). Plus he's Belgian.
-
In reply to: sure would be funny if he got there and god was smoking a cigar and getting a massage "woah dude, did you guys ever miss the point!" I don't expect to find God smoking a cigar or getting a massage, but I do expect that far too many people in Heaven will get the 'you totally missed the point' message.
-
I wouldn't mind a good cigar and a massage right now. Sorry, carry on with your arguement
-
I expect that when I'm standing at the gates, chatting with Pete, god might walk by, see me and suddenly put his hand to his face and changes directions, "aw shit, I don't want to talk to that guy!!"You see, I've got some pointed questions to ask
-
and I suspect he might have some pointed answers to give you...along with a cigar.
-
it sure is. i can just feel it in the air

Thank God the funeral's over. Now the news channels can get back to covering the Michael Jackson trial, like they're supposed to.
-
Who give a shit about Michael Jackson's case. He is a sick man and once he goes to prison he's going to get fucked over!
-
I'm not sure what the priests would do, but the Pope would forgive him, either way.
-
So how about new Pope Benedict XVI? Will he mellow out, now that he's the leader?
-
Better keep this thread alive, he's so old he'll probably be dead soon too. Its so bad to say, but probably true.

Nowadays 78 is not that ancient for a healthy person. If you've spent time in the Boston area (former home of Cardinal Bernard Law), the pedophile priest scandal is still a big deal.NYT, 23 April 2005:In reply to:...When the scandal was snowballing in 2002, Cardinal Ratzinger was among several Vatican officials who appeared to minimize the problem."In the United States, there is constant news on this topic, but less than 1 percent of priests are guilty of acts of this type," he said in November 2002 during a visit to Spain. "Therefore, one comes to the conclusion that it is intentional, manipulated - that there is a desire to discredit the church."......a panel of prominent Catholic laypeople were appointed by the American bishops to serve on a national review board to examine the causes of the sexual abuse and come up with recommendations......One month later in Washington, the review board released a ground-breaking study it had commissioned by researchers at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who found that more than 4,000 priests in a 52-year period were accused of abusing about 10,000 youngsters -- about 4 percent of all priests. One of the first people to receive a copy was Cardinal Ratzinger, she said....The new pope has not repudiated the remarks he made in 2002 in Spain at a Catholic university there, but he has revised his assessment, Monsignor Scicluna said. "We have learned to put things in context," he said. "I think we are more careful with the numbers now."...
