Saltpeter (potassium nitrate) as an anaphrodisiac is a myth too. It'll help your asthma and preserve your meat though.

David A. Gershaw, Ph.D. on aphrodisiacs and anaphrodesiacs:In reply to:Anaphrodisiacs are substances that are supposed to reduce desire. One of these, saltpeter, has been used in boys' schools and in the army to reduce sexual desires. However, saltpeter is only a diuretic, causing frequent urination. First, it was used to deal with physical fevers. From this, someone decided that it might also reduce "sexual fevers." Of course, if a guy is spending all of his time going to the bathroom, he probably won't be too occupied with sex.

the myth most likely started in the Royal Navy where it was used as a food preservative. The salors began to assume the additive was infact there to keep their willies in order. The rumour tends to propigate through all manner of sequestered male populations "dude, don't eat the mashed potatoes, they put stuff in em".In fact, a CO would have to be nuts to treat his men with the stuff as it's side affects can include gastroenteritis, high blood pressure, anemia, kidney disease, and general weakness. Not desireable in a fighting force. It can lower the blood pressure to an extent that getting a boner is the least of your problems.
