I think she needs to be exposed to Marilyn Manson and other music even more extreme than that. Give me a break. I've met the guys from Green Day and they're nice and very approchable.
I think your mom need therapy.
-
My mom doesn't like my "devil music", she actually called it that. and she just saw a list of the song titles, she hasn't even heard them . Dimmu Borgir type of stuff. who cares what your mom thinks? Listen to what you like.
-
She wants to hear music about drugs... Turn on Kottonmouth Kings for a while
-
I have always liked Green Day, but nowadays people try to blame everything thats bad in the world on bands, that don't play "POP"music.I think you should actually try and get your mum to sit down and listen to their new album...It's just rock music!
-
dude like a couple months ago i wus all MM and KoRn and slipknotnow its more orignal punk like sex pistols and guns n roses(i like VR too) and the clash op ivy and GD
-
HUH? she's cool with G n R, slipknot and korn but not green day?? itches head
-
lol i kno
-
that make no sense. Slipknot is MUCH heavier than greenday. And greenday isnt even that bad, big difference between Slipknot and greenday. But then again, my mom is the same way, she hates my "Devil Music" as she calls it.

It sounds to me she just doesn't like Green Day, for reasons that she isn't telling you.I'm 31, but I used to get a lot of crap about the music I listen to from my parents, and to this day can't play any of the music I like when they're in the car with me because they always complain about it. I am a big fan of Nirvana and when Kurt Cobain killed himself I got a lot of grief from them about it. Even before that, because of the drugs, but hell, a lot of musicians were on drugs. Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and Hank Williams were all addicted to some kind of drugs, and they listed to their music.God forbid if they ever heard any of the music me and my buddies played when we had a band or our own.So does your mom listen to Gospel music 24/7?

The irony is that Green Day sucks now compared to their old stuff.

Hey everyone! I'm an 18 year old kid from the US (there's my short intro), and finally found something compelling enough to get me off my lazy proverbial and register an account to post here.Anyway, these days, it seems that every time some horrible tragedy happens that was caused by some mentally screwed-up teens (example: school shootings), the news media becomes obsessed by what they listen to. Usually, they make a big deal about this "satanic" music (which almost always happens to be some sort of German "death metal" - not really, but if you don't know what it says and don't care to find out, you can call it anything, I guess). Rammstein has been picked on more than once, though I don't think they turn people into serial killers, because I have several friends who listen to that stuff regularly, and they seem to be just fine. The lyrics still aren't that great, either from a literary point of view, or from a moral POV (anyone guess what "rein, raus" aka "in, out" is about?). I still haven't seen anything in their lyrics that would indicate that they're of a national socialist persuasion (quite to the contrary), though they do have some weird stuff from time to time (look up the meaning of "zwitter").Moving back slowly toward the topic, my parents have "discoverd" my stash of music on the computer several times (no, honestly, I don't even look at porn on there - I'd hate to imagine the consequences if they found some of that!). They got all worked up over finding Boston's "More than a feeling" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to heaven" - such heavy metal was not appropriate! Another time, my mom got very upset when she "caught" me listening to some Iron Maiden piece. As some of you might know, IM draws some of their songs from old sources, like Rime (sp?) of the ancient mariner, so there was nothing objectional about the lyrics - sometimes I get the impression that they think that the devil must reside in electric guitars and drums, or some nonsense like that! Yet a different time, a Dream Theater song that talks about the drummer's recovery from an alcohol addiction was mistaken by her to be promoting suicide (how she made that connection, I have no idea). To finally make some attempt at answering your question, I think that neither of you are exactly "right" or "wrong"; each person has their own preference of musical style - predominantly influenced by the period in which they grew up. Where this becomes a problem is when that personal preference is turned into The Law (or, for the religious among us, "God's Preference"). I'm all for respecting other's preferences, such that if I liked rap (I don't) and knew my dad couldn't stand much of anything more than oldies (he can't), I wouldn't blast it for the purpose of pissing him off. While, if I were a parent, I wouldn't want my kids listening to music that promoted killing and rape, I realize that lyrics are totally separate from style, and I hope that if I ever am in that situation, that I will be much more reasonable about it than my parents have been.Bonus tip: if you're around anti-contemporary religious nuts, it's fun to let them give you grief about your music, and then point out the dirty little facts such as the sarcasm wonderfully holy lyrics of Beethoven's 9th, or Tchaikovsky's homosexuality, or Liszt's promiscuity (er, he had lots of women)...

Country music makes me want to kill people...
just kidding

Seen Greenday live, seeing them again in a couple of months.
Ultimately most bands sing about drugs, violence etc. Music at its core is about expressing what is going on in a musicians life and what there feeling about the world. Drugs especially play a unfortunately large part in many peoples lives, musicians, like greenday dont promote drugs but can be inspirational to people trying to get off them. Greenday are also known for their strong views, especally about US politics. Its there way of getting their view accross, but people picket city centres in protest, go on strike or if they have a problem, load a gun and blow their problems away. There are peaceful and violent forms of protest. I feel Greenday, as with many bands play the Peaceful way to protest and surely must be respected for that.

Rap isn't about beating woman...
-
But a lot of it is about bitches and ho's and shooting and macho swaggering.
