I'm sure this issue has been touched far too many times on here, especially with you clever people. Anyway, I'm just a bit confused... How can people take pride in being anti-capital punishment if their reason is "it's better for criminals to rot in prison." Being anti-capital punishment to me means being humane and not killing other humans, clearly I'm a rarity. People who want people to rot in prison are worse than people who support the death penalty. That's all, have a lovely day. Kthxbye.

Capital Punishment

thou shalt not kill

In reply to:How can people take pride in being anti-capital punishment if their reason is "it's better for criminals to rot in prison."They're not taking pride. They're making a cold calculation; they want to maximize vengeance. In reply to:Being anti-capital punishment to me means being humane and not killing other humans, clearly I'm a rarity. In the evangelical South of the U.S., you'd be in the minority. In most of the rest of the industrialized West, you would not.

See Damien.
See Damien stay.
See Damien stay out of this one!

Good boy!

In reply to: Well, I don't support "legal" murder by any state. You support abortion, which is the killing of an innocent child, but it is wrong to punish a massmurderer with the death penality.
-
How about if someone doesn't support the death penalty and doesn't support the right to abortion? (That's the position of the Catholic church.)
-
-
It doesn't deter crime, so I dont get the point.
-
The government is also going to make mistakes (look at the number of people who've been sprung from death row). Is there a point where the number of wrongful executions outweighs whetever the benefits of execution are, assuming there are any? And it's an expensive and lengthy process. But if it were sped up and made cheaper, the number of wronful executions would increase. At least if someone is left to "rot in a cell", there would be more time to correct injustices. Few people on death row have had the benefit of Beverly Hills lawyers.
-
That's what I meant about maximizing vengeance. You didn't answer the question; you just restated it.Torture would be even better punishment.
-
well done Damien, well done.

I think capital punishment is more of the harsher crime. Jail isn't always that bad. Maybe the first couple of months where you are the fresh meat and you're getting use to everything. However in the end you become a part of that society and you learn and get use to it. I don't know about capital punishment. It seems hard to divide the line where who gets jail and who gets the lethal injection. I think we have it so it would save space in the jail cells.....lol. too bad torture is illegal under law. I think it breaks one ofthe amendments??? Of unusual punishments....I think? lol
-
Jail isn't always that bad.I guess you haven't lived in a men's penitentiary! > too bad [?!?!?] torture is illegal under law. I think it breaks one ofthe amendmentsAside from the fact that it defies civilized behavior, the 8th amendment of the U.S. Constitution says: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."> I think we have it so it would save space in the jail cells.....It would be a lot cheaper to build more jails, even if the inmates were incarcerated for the rest of their lives.> It seems hard to divide the line where who gets jail and who gets the lethal injection. The U.S. Supreme court is continuing to refine that line. Now it's unconstitional to execute minors. Eventually, as popular opinion shifts against capital punishment, it will go away again (as it did for a number of years when the Supreme Court determined that the death penalty was unevenly applied w.r.t. race).

Well Like...well like! I mean I know jail isn't great. But like I know this sounds stupid and media influenced. But like shawshank redemption sure he gets harassed like crazy and stuff...but he seemed..wait he was helped by the guards..nvm lol! So wait if guys get uhm...touched in jail. What do girls get in all girl jails? cause they never say anything bad about the female jails.
-
Guys don't just get "touched" in jail, they also regularly get the crap beaten out of them if they're not an alpha male, or if they haven't learned how to make themselves invisible. But I'd give a women's prison a whirl if they'd let me in.
-
Well...thats no fun. So in a girl's jail is it the same? Because I always hear what happens in an all male jail. However in a female jail its like...unheard of.
-
Martha Stewart did OK in her cushy federal prison, but most aren't that nice. The problem is that there aren't usually enough female convicts (although that is changing) to justify building a lot of prisons, so the petty thieves are in with the violent killers...at least that's true in Massachusetts.

Diane Sawyer just did a stint for PrimeTime or one of those shows about life in a womens penetentiary. I missed most of it, but what I saw, life in the womans section is/can be pretty brutal too. Women regularly have sex (forced or otherwise) with each other and those women who are "butch" are highly sought after and are almost priviledged. Being "butch" is the next best thing to having a man according to the inmates.
-
I'm butch. Lemme in.There aren't many women on death row, but a woman was put to death in Texas not too long ago. I'm sure death row is hideous no matter your gender.
