i don;t knwo wut a IM-type program is

ICQ is just another type of Instant Messaging (IM) program like Yahoo Messenger, AIM, MSN Messenger
-
oh
-
ICQ was the first of the Instant Messengers. It's now owned by AOL and has been rather neglected. It uses numbers rather than names or email addresses.

icq was the best. the original for me and all of my friendsunfortunately all it took was "cute" emoticons of msn for herds of women to change over, then herds of guys chasing women to go over with them.i'd have icq on right now but after 7 years, its finally not loading. mmm might have to reinstall.icq number is what identifies you on icq (or your name / nick)46282159, i'll never forget it. heh im such a nerd

i use icq now. i didn't know what it was at first either. when i sign on it makes a noise like i hear when i was on the natchez cruising the mississippi. It's hilarious.

I friggin hate that damn sound. That sound is the reason I don`t use ICQ. I only use it sometimes for file-tranfers
-
I prefer irc, lol it's a lot more fun
-
huh

MSN is the best IM, and the new v7 is even better .. way ahead of others -
but you've got more scripts to play with for irc

Definetely, IRC is the best of all.

I used to use ICQ. Excuse my memory but isn't/wasn't ICQ actually an IRC based service?ICQ was a simplified GUI for IRC or is my memoriy of the mid-late 90's getting cloudy already?
-
I don't know the history behind ICQ, but I do know that IRC was invented and created by a guy Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 or so. At the beginning it was only used for military purposes and such but then it eventually expanded and now it's the oldest and biggest chat system on the internet. The IRC protocol is even older then the www (World Wide Web) protocol... Sry about the qucik history lesson of IRC :P

no need to appologise!thanks for the info. I've been in the comm biz for a very long time and I'm always interested in tid-bits about legacy.

IRC is Internet Relay Chat..
It's basically a "HUGE IM world" ... sorta. (Trying to explain it using things people here know about :P)
Difference:
In IM like AIM or MSN it's mostly a 1-on-1 conversation (unless you do chats and such).
On IRC it's opposite.. the main "focus" is on chats... where up to hundreds and even thousands can join and just talk or run a trivia or something like that (These are called Channels, or chans for short). But there are also the 1-on-1 conversations like on any IM thing, called Private Messaging or more commonly known as a query.Sorry ... I'll shut up

I was about to pull you up and say it's called query or /q for short lol
