Days, seven equal periods of time. Ffs, the book is only so many millenia old. I think a non literal translation is in order to get ANY sense out of it at all. Onan also relates to contraception.. HINDUS ARE MAD!!

Top 10 signs you're a fundamental christian

5. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.
Now I am not religious, but I am grateful for *Ahem*[5-10] some of these rules listed in the 10 Commandments.
Because they are basic rules and have shaped our society and our culture. -
So you think we have those rules because of the ten commandments? We would've made up those rules sooner or later, without some stone tablets.
-
I've gotta drop in here and share George Carlin's revised commandments from When Will Jesus Bring The Porkchops?:1. Thou shalt always be honest and faithful, especially to the provider of thy nookie.2. Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless, of course, they pray to a different invisible avenger than the one you pray to.and this is his addition:3. THOU SHALT KEEP THY RELIGION TO THYSELF!The first two really do cover most of what the 10 commandments did, and obviously the second has been revised with a historical perspective. However, for this thread I think the third is most relevant. Religion is blind faith and logic is often a worthless argument to anyone with a strong blind conviction.

- Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long.Even if they abuse you? I have to honor my mother even in she beats me senseless every day, and my father, even if he rapes me every night?> 6. Thou shalt not kill.No one seems to agree on the definition of "kill". Why did a fundamentalist Christian U.S. president send people to kill other people, including civilians?> 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Not many people pay attention to this, no matter how religious they are.> 8. Thou shalt not steal. The Ten Commandments gets credit for things that are necessary for folks to coexist in a society. The credit is misplaced. Same for Commandment 6.> 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.Things like this lose their original meaning when read outside of the context in which they were written (by humans).> 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.Then God must not be a capitalist; that's one of the cornerstones of most free economies.

So if I pray to a different god than you, you can come kill me? Interesting.
-
Read closer, and put it into a historical context. Think about Ireland, the Israeli-Palestinean Conflict, The Crusades, The Holocaust..."Thou shalt not kill" is preached often, but when it comes to religious conflicts/persecution it's often waved in favor of Carlin's commandment. There have probably been more people killed in the name of God than for any other reasons combined. Personally, I couldn't care less who you pray to. They won't help you if you try to shove religion down my throat.
-
"Think about Ireland, the Israeli-Palestinean Conflict, The Crusades, The Holocaust..."And you think all those examples were right, as in they didn't break the commandments?
-
not being a slanderer of reviler of religion, I do sometimes wonder if we could ever quantitatively weigh the historical good against the bad. Mother Theresa vs. Adolf Hitler etc.
-
Mother TheresaI won't bore you with the details, but Mother Theresa is no angel, and it's a travesty that she's being canonized. Look up Christopher Hitchens for more information...he wrote a book about her.
-
Hitler took an economically crushed nation and put everyone to work. There are still old folk who think he's a hero for that and prefer to ignore that whole holocaust thingy. Most of the saints have skelletons in their closets.
-
And there are many folks who think Stalin was a hero (one is a member of this board). The reverence sometimes sounds...religious.
The point is that a lot of good that is ascribed to religion is an illusion. -
I still have no clue how you're reading that I think those were right. Those examples were all exercised as a DIRECT CONSEQUENCE of religion and in most of the named scenarios with the full knowledge of those ten little commandments. The Crusades were a Christian affair and they CLEARLY believed in the commandments (dripping sarcasm in case you're too slow to pick it up). Additionally, the leaders and instigators of said crusades were obviously led by God's voice (my favorite was the Children's Crusade). If you don't get how unbelievably hypocritical the major religions have been in upholding those holiest of commandments you honestly deserve a beating for stupidity. That was my point, and also Carlin's. Thus the qualification on that commandment that it was to be held in a historical perspective.I'm out for the weekend, Paz

the commandments sure have been given a lot of caveats by their strongest proponents over the yeas"thou shalt not.... unless.. except when.. but.."
-
Whatever we seem to be talking about two different things. Case closed.

darn people cool down.. I showed this to my mother( she is a devout christian and tried to raise my entire family with her beliefs but allowed us to venture out with our own spritiual beliefs wether it be another religion or being an atheist) ahem as i was saying i showed this to my mother, she laughed. so if an extremely religious woman can laugh at this at 7am so can you.. it's not even offensive even a tiny bit to her... anyway i laughed, this is hysterical.
-
So since your mother laughed at this, that must mean everybody can?
Ok
-
not what i said, it just means people need to lighten up a bit.. not like the poster was directly putting the religion down slandering the very symbol and thought.
