I hate 'em too. I avoid them whenever possible. Ever see the Seinfeld episode where Elaine gives her "free" friend a bra and she just wears that? great stuff

Training bras?
-
Be careful going without a bra doesnt strain the breasts. Even walking can put a strain on them. You might not find out until you suddenly realise they are starting to sag. The Germans and Scandiavians tend to go braless a lot in the summertime. When they then go topless on the beach you can often tell.

not wearing a bra isn't going to make your breasts sag permanently, gravity and age does that
-
Well don't bras counteract the effect of gravity on the breast? By supporting the breast, the skin and whatever is under the skin is not stretched, thus delaying the effects of gravity on the breast. I think if you put two women of equaly stature and breast size and one never wore a bra, you would probably find that the one who never wore a bra to have saggy/saggier breasts.

Why Breasts SagWhile a good bra can make the breasts look better, Dr. Christine Haycock, a surgeon at New Jersey Medical School in Newark, said it has no effect whatsoever on their tendency to sag which is an inherited quality. She adds that a lifetime of bra-wearing does little to preserve the natural curves of the breasts. That wrong notion began when doctors earlier thought that the ligaments that support the breasts had to be aided by a bra to prevent a pendulous profile. But the truth turned out to be much different. How the ligaments react to gravity is largely a matter of skin elasticity, experts say. And how elastic your skin is all boils down to heredity. Thus, breasts that are doomed to droop at a certain time will eventually do so regardless of how long a woman wears a bra."It’s true that most women’s breasts lose their perk with age and extremely large-breasted women will, in general, be affected earlier and to a certain degree. But the reasons aren’t related to ligaments or even strictly dependent on breast size. Much more important are inherited characteristics such as skin elasticity and breast density which reflects the ratio of lightweight fat to heavier glands," explained Deborah Franklin in Health magazine.http://www.netasia.net/users/truehealth/Bra.htmContrary to popular belief, going braless doesn't mean that your breasts are destined to droop. There's also nothing unhealthy about wearing one as long as it fits properly. Bras do not preserve the shape or perkiness of breasts. Sagging results from a number of factors unrelated to brassiere wearing, such as:breast fat and tissue composition softening of breast ligaments and loss of breast tissue with age enlarged breasts during pregnancy, which causes the skin to stretch and remain stretched even after they revert to pre-pregnancy size effects of gravity over a woman's lifetimehttp://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1729.html

OK I stand corrected. But I still don't buy it 100%. It seems counter-intuitive that support has no effect.
-
Even though it seems counter-intuitive, evidence supports Amanda. It's also notable that Bra companies haven't been able to come up with any support for the "prevents sagging" theory. Some studies have even alleged that bras cause greater sagging. The theory here is that the support given by the bra causes connective ligaments to atrophy. I've linked to the abstract to this article: Ashizawa K, Sugane A, Gunji T. Breast form changes resulting from a certain brassiere. J Hum Ergol (Tokyo). 1990 Jun;19(1):53-62.Who knows the merits of this study, but it just goes to show that not everything is what is seems when it comes to the breast

even if wearing bras did help, mine were ruined by having my first kid, so I just don't care anymore. Saggy b's are no fun, esp. when you're tall and big-framed like me.

Lmao, Dr. Christine Haycock... ok, sorry.

Thanks for your post Amanda. This has cleared up some misconceptions I had.
