i have this weird smell distortion thing that alters my sense of smell and taste drastically, and makes everything very unpleasant to smell or eat. only one nostril is affected and to get rid of it when it occurs i have learnt to block my 'good' nostril with my finger and then 'snort' or push mucous into the other to 'block' it up. this relieves the problem, but it keeps coming back sometimes 30 or more times a day. on really bad days it is accompanied by nausea, and after performing my 'cure', i am left quite dizzy and just lately with a throbbing pain in my head - sometimes i wake up with quite a sore head also. i have come across some literature about brain tumours being a possible cause and wonder if anyone can shed any light? I had nasal surgery about 10 years ago to try and fix the problem, but it only helped for a short time. I am a smoker (dont need to be told the obvious thanks!), and have been for 20years or so. ALSO my eye tooth directly below the affectd nostril is now dead, and I know it is somehow related, it has gone black on the inside of it, and is slowly falling to bits.

Smell distortion, dizzy, nauseous, sounds bad eh?
-
Could very well be some sinus infection (and can be related to the tooth).
-
yes, but that was not found to be the reason when i last saw a doctor about it - in fact, they couldnt tell me what it might be, although i did have a CT scan, but thats going back 10years now.
-
ALSO - when this distortion is present, moving my eyes suddenly makes me dizzy and nauseous, which is a bit worrisome?

I think it's time to have another scan. Scanners are better now, and the infection, or whatever it is, may have progressed.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE I AGREE
