At one point in time, I was heavily opposed to the use of this drug under any circumstances, sitting behind opinions and supposed facts that I had no idea of their validity. However, after reading up on marijuana, knowing a group of people who smoke marijuana, and have tried it myself, I have come to a completely different conclusion.Marijuana, for all the websites, research, and even reports that I have read, there have been no reports of death in regards to marijuana. There have been no findings of 'brain damage' due to marijuana use (this would not make sense anyway, because it would nullify ANY chance marijuana would be used medicinally, as its brain damaging effects would outweigh getting rid of pain), no breathing ailments, nothing. I've found that people who oppose marijuana don't understand much about it. For example, people say that marijuana is a 'gateway' drug. All of the people that I know, including people that I do not know (friends of said people), all of my friends online that know marijuana users, it stops with the marijuana. Granted, any drug is subject to opening a gateway for addiction, but it isn't exactly the drug itself. It's only the 'tip of the iceberg'. That would be the equivalent of blaming a violent video game for the horrific acts of Columbine. As with any drug, abuse can and will lead to harm. For example, 'stoners' (in my definition stoners are people who smoker marijuana in large amounts almost every day) have a problem. Then again, so do alcoholics, people addicted to pain medication, those addicted to opiates, etc. I have smoked marijuana on more than one occasion, and I have still retained my intelligence, composure, etc. I do not classify myself as "f***ing up my life", nor do I see using a drug properly as a bad idea. Another excuse people have for being against marijuana is that people use it to 'escape life'. I agree with being against the use of marijuana for this purpose, but then again like I've said, there are a multitude of other drugs and other ways (for example eating when depressed, overractive exercise) that one can 'escape life'. I do not see this as an adequate excuse for hating a drug. I am not condoning people to go out and smoke marijuana illegally, however I want people to recognize that many of the excuses used against marijuana lack proper foundation. If anyone would like to read more about what I am talking about, visit this link:http://www.essaysample.com/essay/000894.html(And no, I didn't read this essay and suddenly become a pro-marijuana person)The following link explains the effects of marijuana during use, not it's long term effects. Many people confuse the two. Not only that, but many of the 'claims' of marijuana's effects have no scientific backing. They are just hypothesises.http://www.faadrug.com/mar.asp

In regards to marijuana use...

Nice post!
-
Thank You.I just want people to know, that although inhaling anything isn't exactly healthy, marijuana is not nearly as horrible as most make it out to be. It's just a social taboo that's been put into legal form (the legal part being the fact that marijuana is illegal), and that there are far worse things out there. Besides, any drug, in moderation, could have positive effects. Likewise, abuse of any drug always has consequences as well.
-
Yeah.. I agree.. Moderation is the key to everything. Moderation and self control. You have both of those and some common sense, you can use marijuana without messing up your life. Just the govts anti-drug propaganda warps these young kids minds... lol

Carl Sagan is one of the most beloved scientists ever. He's probably educated more people on science than any man in history. Also, he was renown for debunking fake sciences and such. He also experimented with marijuana. When he first tried it, he actually believed it was a placebo, a complete hoax. But he wasn't convinced, of course, and tried again. He finally got high and he loved it. He even thought it was possible that the cultivation of marijuana lead to the creation of agriculture and civilization. Of course, that was only an idea, one he liked for its irony. He was a scientist, so he knew that a theory isn't a truth. He loved listening to music, looking at colors, and having sex high - just as we all do. He never found anything wrong with marijuana through its use. In fact, he came up with some of his greatest scientific ideas while stoned."I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, un-available to us without such drugs."He never admitted to being a marijuana user, but the truth is he wrote articles under the pseudnym Mr. X about his exploits.Ladies and gents, this is Carl Sagan for chrissake! The man responsible for the education of... what millions upon millions of people? One of the most brilliant minds ever.I'm just saying give marijuana a chance!

Carl Sagan having sex? I'll have to think about that next time I'm having sex.
"I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, un-available to us without such drugs."
I think people who are high think a lot of their thoughts and ideas are very clever...until they think about them when they're not high. But anything's possible. A lot of musicians swear by it...but I dunno.

i agree with every word that you wrote.

Personally, marijuana does not make me any more PRETENTIOUS, which is essentially what you are implying, SteveA. You probably watched that movie Traffic - you know, when those kids are smoking weed and acting like idiots, having stupid epiphanies. They think they suddenly know how to save the world or something. Ridiculous.(LOL. Now I'm thinking of that anti-drug commercial in Harold & Kumar. A kid smokes for the first time and grabs a gun and shoots himself. It's also very ridiculous.)"I can remember one occasion, taking a shower with my wife while high, in which I had an idea on the origins and invalidities of racism in terms of Gaussian distribution curves. It was a point obvious [sic] in a way, but rarely talked about. I drew curves in soap on the shower wall, and went to write the idea down. One idea led to another, and at the end of about an hour of extremely hard work I had found I had written eleven short essays on a wide range of social, political, philosophical, and human biological topics... . I have used them in university commencement addresses, public lectures, and in my books."- Carl Sagan(Nothing feels so good as taking a shower high, feeling each and every particle of water dripping down your body.)When I'm high, I think the same thoughts as usual. The difference can be the angle from which I view them. I'm a writer; I write a lot when I'm high. Sometimes I make silly errors, etc., but other than that the writing is fine, sometimes very charged. Obviously, many of my thoughts, sober or stoned, end up recorded. So I can speak for myself that, no, marijuana does not, in hindsight, make my thoughts any more or less clever.I'm also a student (after my English major, atm). I certainly don't (often ) go to class stoned - just as I wouldn't go to class drunk. That said, I would MUCH rather go to class high than wasted. Still, sober is the way to go for school. Marijuana can be distracting; one must be careful with its use. Also, perhaps Shakespeare was a lot less clever than we all make him out to be as well, considering that cannabis residue was found in pipes from his home (as published in the South African Journal of Science).Of course, SteveA, perhaps it is different with some people than others. It probably is. I'm not trying to dismiss your opinion. But a little marijuana (or a lot) never killed nobody (fact). All I'm trying to say is - Give peace - I mean - give marijuana a chance. I'm not saying smoke it. Just give it a chance. And it's not a weed. It just so happens to be a very beautiful plant.

If you think I'm an anti-marijuana person, you're mistaken. I think anti-marijuana laws are ridiculous, and adults should be able to do what they want in that department. I think it's possible that marijuana has medicinal uses, an I wish more medical research were done on the subject. People who are in pain, have no appetite, etc, should not be deprived of marijuana, if they want it. I think hemp is of fantastic utility. I think being high feels good (although I haven't myself been high for a long, long time). I think there's real value to something that gives people pleasure. However, when I was in college, I never saw anyone come up with any clever concept or amazing idea while high. And I did know a lot of bright and intellgent people. I can tell you that it was an impediment when doing calculus and physics homework. It seemed to make people not be concerned about letting things slide...things like homework and studying. If I ran a company, I surely wouln't want everyone who worked there to be stoned while on the job (although I wouldn't care what they did when they weren't working). It's certainly possible that being stoned might help the creative process under some circumstances, for some people, in music, art, and perhaps other areas, but for day-to-day tasks, even where creativity is required, I don't think it would be helpful.
-
Ouch! Calculus stoned must be a real killer.I think we're in the exact same position. I don't use marijuana to enhance skills at all. I use it for recreation as most people do. I don't smoke it and say, "All my problems are solved now."It's all about knowing when and when not to use it.But I will admit that marijuana can get me charged up and thinking in different ways. Luckily, writing is revisional work - as is music and most other art. That's probably why marijuana doesn't change that aspect much, seeming to enhance it. It gets me doing the work, putting pen to paper you could say. I can go over my work again later, clear out the mistakes. Well met, Steve, here in the center of the universe.Although I do disagree with the last statement I was disagreeing with. lol "I think people who are high think a lot of their thoughts and ideas are very clever. until they think about them when they're not high."I just rated you 5 stars btwBTW: Daimon_Link,I think it's great that you came to your own conclusion on this matter as america is so uneducated about marijuana it's plain sad. Just like Sagan, you looked for the facts, you tried it, tested it, and came to the conclusion on your own, and I think that's a wonderful thing. You are not a blindless follower; you run your own life. Good job.I just rated you 5 stars as I learned how to rate people just a second ago lol

Uh, thanks. The only creative thing I've done with "high" people lately involved alcohol and music. I know alchol doesn't enhance my ability to play an instrument, but our singer was a bit shy. If she had just enough to drink, she was OK to sing. But if she had too much, she couldn't stay on key. It was a difficult balancing act. We didn't test out any other drugs, although beta blockers would have probably been better for her problem.
-
What about the dangers involved with buying and getting weed? Five deaths of teenagers have happened in the last 2 months in my town due to getting shot while buying weed, and these people already knew each other...they weren't buying from strangers. Getting involved with weed goes well beyond just getting high.
-
Uh, I think that may have something mroe to do with the country you live in rather than the drugs. No one dies buying drugs in Canada (although gangs do shoot each other, but even that is rare (and when I say gangs, I mean the Hell's Angels and a local biker gang The Rock Machine, I don't mean those things you see in American movies with bandana's around their heads, we don't really have those up here)).

There are many things that I can say in response to this, and I'll attempt them as best I can.First and foremost, the illegalization of marijuana in the United States is the cause of many of the problems involving situations similar to what you've just recounted, Amanda. That same scenario (Well not exactly the same, but similar) took place in the early 1900's when prohibition was in effect with alcohol. These problems have absolutely nothing to do with the drug. Rather, they involve who you are getting the substance from, where you get it from, and if it is illegal. You hear little to nothing of these instances in Amsterdam, where marijuana is legal, and you rarely hear instances in the U.S. of alcohol related shootouts (When I say alcohol I do not mean under the influence, but rather a shoot out involving someone trying to buy said drug). Everyone has this stigma, especially in the United States, that marijuana is "bad". It is no worse than alcohol, DXM, Salvia (which is, sadly, a much more powerful drug than marijuana, and some even say its effects are so extreme they aren't even pleasant), and all three of these drugs are readily available and legal in the United States. The bottom line is this, act wisely. This has nothing to do with "oh, they knew each other". They apparently didn't "know" each other or were friends enough because they'd rather shoot at one another over a simple recreational tool than work things out simply. And you cannot use the example of the "addiction" people have with marijuana as this can be said of ANY drug. Addiction is very very much dependent on your mentality, not some physical carnal craving. I used to smoke cigarettes since I was 12. I went cold turkey one day for my benefit. I wasn't addicted to cigarettes, I just used them as a tool for my "benefit" (which come to think, wasn't the best way to relieve stress). Everything said about how marijuana kills brain cells, causes lung cancer, makes you slow, is highly addicting, and is a "gateway" drug, they are all simply not true. Marijuana, just like every other drug, needs to be taken responsibly. And being responsible also means that you are responsible about where you obtain the substance. If you cannot have a complete and total trust between you and who you obtain the substance from, then you shouldn't buy from that person. It's that simple.

cool another smart person on the boards, its nice to see people educate themselves about shit before they offer their opinions on it

What's up guys? I was wondering how long marijuana stays in your system? My friends and I stuffed some marijuana in some black n milds about a month ago and smoked it. I only smoked one black n mild and I was wondering how long it would stay in my system.
