why does the medical community take so long to get test results to patients. my son had a skin biosy and i was told that it would take 2 weeks for the results? this seems really unreasonable since most labs claim to process the specimens with 48 hours. what is the problem? this does nothing to ease the worry and usually generates unwarranted stress!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doctors and medical tests

**it is very hard when you are waiting for results, and i have to admit i was surprised to hear the amniocentisis test take days, when i used to wait for mine, which took a couple of hours!
skin biopsy's are different, or at least they were in my daughters case, as they had to grow some skin from the skin they took, no idea why tho........maybe thay had to do that kinda thing with your sons. Hope you get the results soon hon, its hard waiting I know, but keep smiling *hugs* ** -
the medical profession sometimes loses perspective when it comes to "people" they forget that there is more to us that a vial of blood or a specimen. i find that they do little to comfort and take into considerations the concerns of the patient. My sons dermatologist said that if i didnt hear from him then that meant that everything was ok. i found that to be a little lax, although he is a reputatable doctor. meanwhile my sons pediatrician suggested that we just watch the growth!!!!

My sons dermatologist said that if i didnt hear from him then that meant that everything was ok.Don't ever beleive that. Sometimes test results get lost in the shuffle. Always ask for the results.

exactly!!!!!!!that is why i asked him for a time frame that i could call and get them.he said the standard 2 weeks which is crazy. most ,if not all pathology specimens are completed within 3 days. i worked for a large medical institution and most specimens were completed next day. there are serious health care issues in this country. patient care is lacking to say the least. a few months ago my dog went to the vet and they promptly called me will all test results within 2 days, without my asking.our 4 legged friends certainly receive more gentle and loving care!

I don't know the specific of the test in question, but you have a right to ask the doctor why it will take so long to get the results. It's not like he's not getting paid...it's his job to explain things.

you are absolutely right! i went through this same thing 2 years ago with a biopsy. i was told that results would take 3 weeks. i called before the two week period and they were in. i think that they just cover themselves by telling you that it will take longer so that they are not bombarded with phone calls! i plan to call this week for the skin biopsy that was done last wednesday.if they dont have the results in the office which i will find hard to believe because they are faxed from the labs, then they can call the lab and get them! i am seriously fed up with this as there is no need to cause patients more grief!

> i plan to call this week
You should. Good luck with the bureaucracy. My parents' doctors were in a three-doctor practice. You'd think things would be pretty straightforward, but it felt like they had a cast of thousands working in their office, each chasing their own tails. The thing they were best at was sending bills because they didn't get reimbursed by insurance within a week. They spent a lot of time shuffling paper and wasting postage. Sometimes it took persistence to get things done. Yet important things still fell through the cracks.
