I am 18 years old and going off to college in a month or so. I have known I am ADHD since I was very young but never had the guts to tell my doctor, so I just dealt with it. Now with going to college, I am concerned that I will not be able to make it though my difficult classes (such as organic chemistry and calculus) without treatment for my condition. Any suggestions on how to confront my doctor with this problem while keeping my parents out of the situation??? Thanks.

Getting diagnoised

You are 18. You are an adult. Your parents don't need to know anything about your doctor visit. Even if their insurance is paying, and even they see the paperwork, it'll just say something like "doctor visit".Are you saying that, after 18 years, you have ADHD, and your parents never noticed? That is very hard to believe. Do you feel uncomfortable discussing personal issues with your parents? What are your symptoms?

My parents didn't know I self-injured for 5 years, or had an eating disorder or a number of other things. I am one of four and got overlooked many time. It wasn't hard to hide it from them, and that is exactly what I did, I hide it from them because I was ashamed.

At 18, you might want to further explore your feelings toward your relationship with your parents, but the important thing now is to get the medical care that you need. Didn't the college you're going to require a medical exam? If your parent have to be involved with the doctor, I suppose you can make up a reason for wanting to go. But what you discuss with the doctor is completely private, now that you are an adult. (In fact, you should have been able to have a private talk with the doc before also, unless your parents insisted in being in the examining room...but you could have told them to leave).Your visit may not result in a prescription for anything. Also, there should be a clinic at the school you're going to. They should be able to help.
