Hi all, we run windowsXp Pro (all updated etc) we use a router to connect all the PCs in the house to the net (all drivers and software for that is up to date etc) but for some reason, starting a few days ago, there are some sites we just can't connects to, the 3 i have found so far are Ebay, amazon and Vodafone (arrgghhh can't top up the mobile!!!!) - oh and windows update won't work.........we have tried connecting through firefox, IE and netscape and still no joy.....we run a few anti-virus programmes, ad-aware stuff, spy bots, and the usual security stuff.........and he has re-configured etc etc, and still no joy, anyone had this problem before, or know of something we could try???Thanks a lot.

Help needed from anyone whos know about PC's LOL

Has a kid been messing around with the computer?I'm running Norton Antivirus, Spybot, Pest Patrol, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware, but occasionally I still get crap on the computer. If all the browsers don't work, then it isn't necessarily a problem with IE. Did you install any other programs recently? It sure sounds to me like you may be infected with a hijacker if you can't access certain websites.Being XP, you might want to try rolling back (system restore) to a few days before this happened. There's one more thing to try, that has worked for me in the past...go to www.intermute.com and download CWShredder. I got rid of a rather persistent hijacker on my sister's laptop. Be sure you download the free version.

Neah, doesn
t sound like adware problem. I guess it
s the Ports ( dunno how to translate that in english :/ , you know those thingies a firewall stops ) . Did teh kid mess with the router ? -
hey thanks guys, since i happens on both pcs, and my laptop we think its gotta be something wrong with the router........thankfully we can get onto their website LOL
-
You can disconnect the router and connect one PC directly to the internet if you need to get things done and deal with the router later.

he did just that sdp, and found that he could connect ok, so he has been tinkering with the router, and he seems to have fixed it. Thanks to all for your help hugs

He needs to log onto the router, and open the ports. Ports are specific URL addresses that the computer has to go through to get to the designated sites. What type of router do you use?
-
URL addresses? Huh?"The destination port is used to route packets on a server to the appropriate network application. For example, port 80 is the standard port number for HTTP traffic, and port 80 packets are processed by a Web server. Destination ports are typically well-known ports (0-1023) for common Internet applications such as HTTP, FTP and SMTP. It can also be a registered port (1024-49151) that vendors use for proprietary applications."Somewhere out there is a list of well-known port numbers and what they're used for.

haha yeah ok, not URL...you're right, packets. but most people don't know what packets are. but basically ports are what you connect to different servers through, AW you're having problems connecting to the servers of Amazon.com and the others because a firewall is blocking them. Like steve said, there is a list out there, you just need to find out the respective ports. Or just make sure that your firewall on your router is completely off. Just put a firewall software program on the individual computers.

IP (Internet protocol) packets are the chunks of data that go over the wire, or through the air.
Ports are kind of like the TV channels on your cable system. Your computer has one IP address (usually something like 192.168.1.x if you have a Linksys router), but there are a bit over 65.000 channels that can be used by different applications at the "same time". (Not literally the same time, since the packets all have to get in line and go into and out of the computer one-at-a-time.)
Some applications use non-standard port assignments. If one of those ports is blocked, then those applications will stop communicating. If a standard port (like 80) is blocked, then a lot of stuff will fail.
