While on the oral form of Chemo do I need to wear a condom to protect my wife from the cancer drugs?

Chemo and Sex

Didn't you ask your doctor about this? Yes you should use a condom while having sex when on chemo, as the sperm can cause a stinging sensation inside the woman.

Thank You. I have Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer)so I have had all kinds of test, pre-Liver Transplant. I really didn't think to ask at the time untill we got home. Was going to ask next visit in Dec. needed to know before then. Thanks again!!

Im really sorry to hear about that. Have you been diagnosed long, how are you dealing with such devastating news?
-
The answer is almost certainly yes, but the question can't be answered without knowing what chemotherapy agent you're taking. (Is it Xeloda?)

Fluorouracil (5FU) is the chemo I'll be taking in the pill form. I'll take it two weeks on one week off until transplant.

I found out the end of September. I have had coltis for 26 years so I found out during my annual check-up. Looks like they found it early, it might have been a year or longer before I experienced any symptoms. Chances are it would have been other places so it was a good thing it was found early. My spirts are good I at least have options that's more than some people. I can't control what has been diagnosed it is what it is. I can keep a positive attitude, take it step by step and I have a strong faith. Thanks for asking it also helps to talk.

The only oral 5-FU that I know of is Xeloda (capecitabine), but I assume it would apply to 5-FU in any form: You need to use birth control. You're lucky with the chemotherapy...5-FU is not as toxic most others.Good luck with everything, man. Where are you being treated?

Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN

It definitely does help to talk about it, when my mum had breast cancer she hated it when people didn't mention it as tho it wasn't happening, when it was and it helped her to talk about things. You sound like you have a very postive attitude, i wish you all the best big hugs

That is a top notch place!
It's been rated one of the best in the country. My father went there, when I was younger. He had his back fused together. They were using state of the art technology and performing revelatory surgery....Good luck with this. It sounds like you're in good hands.... Feel free to talk anytime.

You can't do much better than that. You're in the right place.
But no matter where you are, you need to read everything you can about your illness, so you can fully participate in your care, and understand what the doctors are doing to you, each step of the way.
