Hello All,my brother is 8 years old and has had adhd since he was born,he lives in another city so he can attend a'speacil" school with kids that have the same problem. Well in the xmas break he came back and went to pick him up from the airport and noticed he was totally different he wasnt the brother i have always known because hes been taken ritalin and been dosed up on drugs. From other peoples experiance if you go off the drugs at a young age can it be controllable?Would it help my brother in the long run to actually stay on the drugs or go off?Any advice apreciated thanx...

Maybe it's just me, but unless he has ADHD that prevents him from absorbing anything in class whatsoever, the idea of separating him from "normal" kids is absurd. He's being discluded from others and the potential examples that he could look at for improving himself. ADHD tends to be more severe in childhood (overrated for this reason) and there are medications that can help with it.Maybe part of the reason he's so different is that he's been separated from your family for awhile. The drugs may have a strong effect too. Does he seem to be slow, dull, dreary, emotional, etc? Unfortunately, symptoms like this are common when taking strong medications for ADHD.I had ADD when I was younger, and although I occasionally have trouble focusing still (don't we all), it's improved greatly from the way it used to be in early junior high and elementary. I haven't been on medicaton for years and I just applied myself and improved my focus partially of my own will and partially just growing out of it.Personally, I don't think that drugs at his age are all that necessary (unless he has serious hyperactivity problems where he's causing harm to himself or others) and having him away from home to attend a special school is kind of self-defeating in my opinion. The problems that he may have from being cut off like that would probably far outweigh the help an 8 year old would get for ADHD. Most kids tend to be energetic and hyper and that age anyway, boys especially. I know, I have a 7 year old brother and an almost 9 year old sister.
