My fiances son who is 15 is getting some mixed messages regarding his treatment for ADD using Adderall. His father is saying that he should take the medication in the dosage perscribed every day including weekends. Another family member is saying that it is not necessary to keep the medication in the body at a certain level so the kid can take weekends off. I have no clue. Anyone have any insights?

Adderall

Personally never listen to what other people say... do as your doctor prescribes they know best.
Maybe not the answer you are looking for but I work in a doctor's office and you should never listen to anyone outside your medical professionals when it comes to any type of drug. Do as the boy's doctor says when it comes to his Adderall.

**I agree with Ntro, listen to the doctor, not people who 'think' they no, with the best will in the world they arn't doctors.
If there is some confusion im sure the doctor wouldn't mind a quick phone call to go over things,if an appointment isn't available, all medication needs to be taken properly they know that and i don't think any good doctor would mind. ** -
The problem is that two seperate doctors are giving two seperate opinions. I would not think that an amphetamine would need to be maintained at a certain level at all times but I could be very wrong. I do not want to get into a pissing contest with the kids biological father if there is a solid basis to his opinion. If he is just an ass, it is a different thing.
That is why I asked the question.

Is he getting Adderall XR, the controlled-release (long-lasting) version? Would he have withdrawal effects every weekend? If the drug is effective, does it make sense for him to exhibit AD(H?)D symptoms every weekend?I assume he has no issue with his heart or blood pressure.
-
My son was taking Adderall XR. His doctor said it was up to me whether I wanted to not give it to him on the weekends and during summertime. He said the issue with doing that is, the child may experience some type of withdrawl symptoms. Like with my son he would get very emotional and cry. So I just decided to keep him on it. Plus, he needs the focus on the weekends too. Whether he is reading for his book report or cleaning up his room, the medications helps him stay on task.I did not really care for the Adderall becuase it made my son emotional and kind of agressive. He now takes Focaline (sp?). It works 100 times better (at least in his case). Anyway, this is what I know about the meds. It's really up to you. Good luck! Oh, and as a side note. His doctor should be monitoring his blood pressure and wieght.

Im kind of confused as to what the opinions were fromt he two doctors. MAy be you should get a thrisd MD opinion, either that or talk to the pharmacist and see what they say

Adderalls fucking awesome, I took like 4 of those one night with some Klonopins and 6 shots of Smirnoff. I somehow woke up the next morning 30 miles away at a highway reststop sleeping on top of a picnic table in the rain, somehow I drove all the way there.

In reply to:
Adderalls fucking awesome
Don't you mean "Adderall sucks?"
-
My psyciatrist said that if you take a day off the medicine there can be rebounding effects...like WORSE ADD/ADHD so right now im on it everyday..

Everyone is different and how their bodies react, but for the most part it is safe to say he doesn't have to take it constantly. I use to only take mine for school work, but I perform so much better at work when I take it. It is good if I am going to be in certain social situations as well. Depends on how severe his add is I would imagine. Over all I usually take mine on a regular basis during the work week. On my days off I can go without it unless there are some mundane tasks to get done. It isn't going to hurt to try, and if you notice withdrawl symptons like a headache etc then you know it may be best to stay on it. This may also give you personal heads up, because if the withdrawl symptoms are this bad now, just think what they may be like down the road. You might want to try a different drug. Adderall doesn't work like say zoloft it doesn't need to be in your system for a while to kick in. Hope I was of some help! Remember add is a gift

adderall is extremely addicting to use if caught in the habbit. It is the same drug that is used to make XTC in case anyone wanted to know ;O
-
He made the same nonsensical claim here. I don't know if he has an axe to grind or what. I'll just repeat what I said there:Adderall is 1-phenylpropan-2-amine (C9H13N). Ecstasy (MDMA) is 1-benzo[1,3]dioxol-5-yl-N-methyl-propan-2-amine (C11H15NO2).As you can see, they're not even close.
-
Actually, they are quite close, but that doesn't mean they have the same pharmacological properties.
-
You mean in regard to the shape of their molecule? Did I get the empirical formulae right?
-
Adderal is amphetamine (as a mixture of mirror images), and Ecstacy is a substituted amphetamine, so chemically they are very similar. However, the substitution changes the shape of the molecule, and therefore changes its pharmacological properties. Though they have some effects in common (e.g. appetite suppression), in other ways they are very different. They are molecular formulae and not just empirical formulae (empirical formulae are the lowest possible ratios of numbers of atoms) and they are correct. Of course in organic chemistry mere formulae are not sufficient, as millions of different compounds can have the same formula.
-
D'oh! Didn't take chemistry at university. What kind of school lets you get an engineering degree without requiring chemistry? Too much physics, not enough chemistry.Yes...they are amphetamines...as is methedrine.

So this is an old post, and may be considered dead, but I thought I'd drop my tiny bit o' input. The main difference between Adderall and most ADD/ADHD medications is that Adderall lasts approximately 24 hours per dosage (Of course, this depends entirely on the mg prescribed and the person taking the medication) whereas most of these medications actually need to build up in the patient's system to truly take affect. For instance, Adderall can be taken safely throughout the work week and left ignored over the weekend without fear of a "reverse affect" or withdrawal as I saw one or two people mention.A couple of my issues with the medication stem not from the abuse (which essentially any idiot could do with any medication) but from the way I felt while on and off of the drug. I think that yes, the medication does help in some instances (like reading and test-taking) but the euphoric feeling that I had with those positive effects felt too Fake when I came off of the medication.I believe that for some people, hard work, a good counselor who can help with scheduling and organization, and even exercise can really have the most positive affect on an ADD mind. What I mean to say is, medication may be necessary, but it should never be the first solution. The "easy" way out is certainly rarely best.

wtf, no it doesn't.adderall is perscribed to work 13 hours at a time . . . I don't know where you got that but you can't sleep when you're on it. you can't drink coffee, basically the stuff is very addictive if you abuse it. I take 10MG RIGHT when I wake up, it wears off by the evening.

Okay,My little brother takes adderal, not the XR, the real stuff. He takes 20 mg in the morning, and 10 mg during lunch at school. It wears off around 6 or 7 o'clock. Yes, he isn't hungry while he is on it, but he is much more controllable. I apologize for writing on a pretty dead thread.
