I would think that kind of research would have a tough passing through the IRB. To be valid, it would have to not be self-report, which means the researcher does the measuring...which might be tough to get approved...or maybe not.

True penis average size?
-
It wouldn't just be tough to get approved. It would be tough to do. I don't see how someone else can do the measurement without affecting the results. It's kind of like Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, but without the speed and momentum issues. A guy with a ruler would have even more effect than impinging photons.Edit: Hey, how about a glory hole arrangement, where behind the hole would be an ultrasonic device to measure size? The person under test sees nothing, and no other human is involved.
-
Are you talking about the possibility of the physical act of measuring another man's penis causing a slight change in the size of said penis?
-
That's a nice idea, Steve. The biggest difficulty is getting an unbiased sample, because guys who are less endowed are likely to feel less comfortable with being measured by another human, so your idea would help with that, too. Many studies try to deal with problems of getting a full erection by either stretching the penis mechanically or inducing erection chemically, but these introduce their own uncertainties.
-
It just ocurred to me that one of the main reasons such research would probably not be approved is because there is no point. Research is approved and conducted because of its potential application. Research on penis size has no real application beyond making guys feel better or worse.
-
It's useful for condom manufacturers. Personally I also believe that increasing human knowledge and understanding is valuable for its own sake. Research without a commercial purpose has a hard time getting funded nowadays, though.
-
Most basic research has no immediate application. What's the gain in astronomy?
The fact that penis size is related to sex would be more of an obstacle. But some rich person who didn't mind being associated with penis size measurement could fund it. On the other hand, there may be better things he or she could fund.
Actually, Ineligible, going after condom manufacturers for research grants in an interesting idea.

In reply to: Most basic research has no immediate application. That might be true for some areas of research, but not all.

It is like about 5.5-6.5depends from race and other obstacles;also check local pool:http://www.afraidtoask.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB2&Number=184714&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=13000+ man had said the word!

Supposedly 80% of guys are between 5 and 7 inches. So yeah, you're perfectly average
-
When I'm hard I have just about 5 inches. However, when I'm soft, my penis is barely the size of my thumb. Obviously, I'm a 'Grower' and not a 'Show-er', but is it normal for a 24 y/o's penis to be that small when flaccid?
-
why thank you for that answer. i am most happy with my size and so is my girlfriend, so i need not people comin up to me sayin bad things bout me or anythin (not that its happened on here, but just incase )
-
my flaccid dick has good days and bad days. when i think NOTHIN bout it and should go to the shower, he can be boutn the size of my thumb. sometimes, he make me proud and is a bit bigger than my thumb. it doesn't really matter tho. if u were to be a "show-er" chances are u'd be hard, or if ur with a girl, it'll also be hard, so its not like they're gonna see ur flaccid penis. AND, if they do, so what, u go up to 5 inches. i don't see why size should be an issue. its natural to be as you are, else u wouldn't have been made that way (oh yea, gettin all philosophical on youse now)

Mine's just like yours, Scumbag.

Most basic research has no immediate application.> That might be true for some areas of research, but not all.The idea of basic research is that it has no immediate application, or it would be applied research. What basic research does have immediate application?
-
I wasn't really using the word basic in that sense.
