I just had sex with my girlfriend for the first time and although it was great I couldn't reach orgasm. I've been on effexor xr since late last year and I believe that to be the cause of my symptoms. Not only that but I begin to lose interest part way in, even though I want to continue. This cannot be common for an 18 year old male Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else has been through this or knows of a possible solution. Effexor has been the best anti depressant I've tried to this point, giving an overall improvement in my mood (as noted by many others as well). The other side effects have become much more mild from when I started it, except for the loss of sex drive and anorgasmia. I can still ejaculate during masturbation, although it's more difficult than it used to be (although obviously that wasn't as much of a concern before). I'm on a moderately high dose at 225 mg/day so I could always try cutting it back a bit and see how I feel.I would love to be able to get the same sort of drive and sensation back so that having sex could be better. It didn't seem to cause problems for her at all, she loved it, but I wish I could get that same feeling out of it.

Trouble reaching orgasm
-
Yes, it's the venlafaxine (Effexor) - having trouble reaching orgasm is common for most antidepressants that affect serotonin. There are some antidepressants that don't have the sexual side-effects. They include buproprion (Wellbutrin), reboxetine (Edronax, Norebox, Prolift, Solvex, Vestra), mirtazepine (Remeron, Zispin), tianeptine (Stablon), and agomelatine (Valdoxan). These work in a variety of ways, so there should be something to suit everyone. (Some do affect serotonin levels, but don't affect adversely the sexual serotonin receptors.)

I think you should probably talk with your doctor before changing the dosage, just in case. You never know.

The situation in which you are, is not going to be healed with anti-depressant but you need to find a cure for your problem. There are various medicines which are used in case of lack of orgasm; there is caverject, armidex and so on. Recently I read an article on erectile dysfunction which I think is on this page http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3366-s-CAVERJECT.aspx I would advice you to read it. See if you are getting the same symptoms.

Caverject is not a simple treatment for erectile dysfunction. For a start, it has to be injected into the penis each time to create an erection. Too much and the erection won't go down for hours and the tissues get starved of oxygen and painful. It has been rather displaced by oral treatments like Viagra.

No, I'm not trying to heal it with an anti depressant. The problem arises from the fact that this is a side effect of an anti depressant I am currently on. Also, I can get an erection just fine, it's the orgasm part I have a harder time with (urgh, the really pleasurable part). Thanks for the info, it's kinda what I expected, I suppose I'll go to the doctor and ask his opinion. Dropping the dosage isn't worth it though if I start to feel depressed again, even on my current dose, although usually fine, my mood occasionally drops to agonizingly low levels. This is much less frequent than it used to be, and I know it's normal for moods to fluctuate, but it's not something I want to go back to. I'll see what he thinks and try dropping the dose slightly then keep note of any changes I feel or notice.
