Death Penalty?
-
**Eddie, i know hon, but no one takes any notice anyway *hugs* **
-
No amount of money can give you back 30 years of your life.No argument there.> Living on innocence is bullshit. How can you live on that for 30 years? After that long you'll believe you're guilty. Think!Don't "Think!", as if this is a complex problem to figure out, but "look", and see what people who've been let out because of their non-guilt, after decades of imprisonment. Everyone in that situation that I've ever seen interviewed seemed quite happy to be out of prison. Some, especially if they had no family support, had a lot of trouble re-integrating into society. But none of them started getting the idea that they they were actually guilty, and all were very happy to be out of prison.
-
I've tried telling them to stop, but it'll keep going. If you didn't actually participate in so many bicker-fests, I might not think that you're a hypocrite. Instead, you inisist on adding to the general noise level in your role as wannabe mod.So, self-described liberal person, do you have anything substantive to add to this politcally charged issue?
-
How can you contradict an opinion? It's my opinion. I dunno it's like telling me my opinion is wrong.. an opinion cannot be wrong because umm... it's an opinion...??There was a guy who said today, "Overweight people generally dont have good personalities... Can you people not see that?" You replied, "You couldn't be more wrong." That was his opinion. How could he be wrong? If someone is of the opinion that all states have three senators, you'd say, "No, they each have two senators." How can you contradict an opinion? If you were to say, "the rate of wrongful convictions is X, and I find that acceptable", I couldn't really argue with that, beyond saying that I disagree. But I have seen the statistics, and you apparently have not, so it appears that your opinion (once again) is based strictly on your gut feeling.>> If you actually had some idea how many wrongful convictions there, I might give your opinion some credence. But you don't, so your opinion is worthless.> Do you know the exact number?? No you don't so shut it.Shut what? My mind? It's not like this data is impossible to find. I was hoping that someone else would take the initiative and look it up, but so far there have been no takers. I guess I'll have to.The Death Penalty Information Center is a good place to start. On the left, click on "Death Penalty Fact Sheet" (it's a 4-page PDF file), and look for the "Innocence and the Death Penalty" section. You'll see that well over 100 people have been released from death row since 1973, 18 from Illinois and 21 from Florida. This is interesting:In reply to:Research Links Historical Lynchings to Modern Murder Rates and Capital PunishmentPosted: September 27, 2005Recent research has revealed a close correlation between the U.S. states that historically carried out the most lynchings and the states that today have the highest homicide rates and most death sentences.[article follows]There is also factual information on the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty site. You may dispute their conclusions, but a fact is a fact, no matter who conveys it.> Secondly if you DO know the answer why are you not trying to free this men that are wrong convicted? What I do or don't do has no bearing on what the facts are. But I hope this is one issue that people will consider when they vote.> You'd think if the government would wanna do what's right...Getting the picture?I'll just point to your doctor friend's sexual harassment case to bring home the idea that the government doesn't always do the right thing, regardless of the ideal.> Again you tell me I have no proof on how many people are in prison that are wrong convicted BUT yet you cannot tell me either but for some reason you are right and I am wrong. I'm seeing a pattern here.Hopefully we've settled that issue. There is no pattern.>> There's no way the system can ever be perfect, so the rate will never be zero, but I'll ask you for the second time, what error rate is acceptable? Obviously 50% (for example, if that's what it were) is not acceptable. But what rate is? Are you arguing that the rate of wrongful death row convictions in Illinois was "a small amount"?> If you honestly think that wrong conviction rate is 50%..umm.. and you call me an idiot? It's now here near that high, that's just just ridiculous. That's just using common sense. No, I called you an idiot in another thread because of your repetitive-but-baseless insult. If you call me an idiot for a good reason, I'll agree with you.I'm assuming you're just yanking my chain, because I know you're fluent in English. I asked you: What do you think an acceptable error rate is? Do you think 50% is acceptable? I clearly wasn't claiming that the wrongful conviction is 50%.> Can we just give this a rest now? That depends on how much you value having the last word.

Well I didn't read your post, just wanted to let you know I am done with the topic. It's old and annoying others on the board. I agree to disagree and that's that =-D
-
Have you taken a poll of what pisses off whom? I know you're fond of IMing WTF-is-wrong-with-that-guy Private Messages, but I wouldn't consider that a scientific poll.I put up a bunch of information and references that were germane to the topic, unlike your last post. You are either too lazy to read the references, or too ignorant to understand them. You challenged me to put up data, I put up data. Now you pout and take home all of your marbles. So very, very clever.
-
Not trying to be Clever Steve. People on the board are annoyed with the bickering and I myself am annoyed with it, that is why I did not read your post. I have learned with you I cannot give MY Opinion without you juumping all over it. Find someone else to harrass because I'm done with it.Take Care.
-
You had to have the last word to say that? You could read it, look at the reference, shrug your shoulders, and be done with it. The statistics cited have nothing to do with anyone's bickering. They are what they are. You've declined to do that, and instead you posted a vacuous reply, for reasons on which we can only speculate. Amazing. Sad, but amazing. That's my opinion. But an opinion can't be challenged, because it's an opinion, right?
-
F-you! We had a good post going till you came along!
-
FU2. Did you read the references in my post above, or do you prefer to continue to have an uninformed argument in the dark?Got anything useful to add, bub? Folks are arguing their fuzzy opionions, and I put up useful references to substantive information in two different posts.I have to pop your bubble, but eventually threads run their course. People aren't going to debate the death penalty here forever. Go do a search of past discussions on controversial topics (there have been many) and see how they went.
-
most ended in bickering, generally off topic. With or without the participation of the current bickerers in question. It's the natural evolution of conversation (if you believe in evolution, that is)
-
The reason we got off topic was because you are an asshole! And you just think your right 100% of the time.
-
That was a great contribution to the thread. And FU2.
-
Don't bother trying to convince him, he's been told that since the day he came here and obviously still doesn't listen, so it's hopeless
-
steve carpet bombs facts on others' opinions. If your, or any one's, opinion is week, someone will challenge you.I have debated so many people who are on the "same side" as me beacuase I won't let an absolute stement go... ever
-
Point is babe, no one should be debating and ragging on someones opinion. Trust me I agree with anyone that it's okay not to like someones opinion. The great thing about someones opinion is it's someone elses LoL. Plus, like my opinion above, I know it'll never happen it's just my personal opinion on what I think should be done. Ya know? =-D
-
Sweetie I wasn't being rude or trying to fight, I was talking to Mr.U about why some of us get upset when Steve attacks out opinions. That's all. Please don't think I'm re-hashing anything because I'm not. Thanks though.

We understand you, hon. It's your opinion and you're entitled to have it. You sure apply that selectively. It's just hilariously ironic when two of the three most argumentative people around here take such a holier-than-thou attitude.> Point is babe, no one should be debating and ragging on someones opinion.I hate to rain on your little lovefest with the opinionated liberal feminist (roughtly her own words), but I think you might be crazy. You challenge people's opinions all over the place. If it's someones opinion that gay men are [some objectionable thing], you are there in a shot, telling them how wrong they are. And you are not shy about using the word "wrong". Do you want me to cite the many, many posts of yours where that's true?I seriously doubt that OLF agrees with your opinions in the capital punishment area. The principle of "the enemy of my enemy...." applies, and OLF can never resist the temptation to pile on.> no one should be debating and ragging on someones opinion. Why do you think your opinions are beyond reproach? I don't think mine are. If someone shows me something factual that indicates my question in wrong or questionable, I have no problem with that. If you have time to burn, you can look up the posts. If you don't want to be challenged, then don't post opinions on public forums. Start your own blog, and don't let anyone else post to it.Congratulations though, you have found my button. That is: Say something as if it's an objective fact, and keep making believe that you don't see and don't hear the contraditory or confounding information that is put up. Just repeat what you said in the first place. Then repeat it again. And again. It irritates me to no end that you and folks who think like you vote. It makes our current political situation that much less of a mystery. If I disagreed with you, but put a "Hun" at the start and a "** Hugs **" at the end, would my criticism be more palatable? In any case, facts are your friend, not you're enemy. Give the reality-based world a try.

I set myself up for that didn't I...Not even gonna come back to this overly hijacked thread.
