Course in learning Welsh

Yea I agree with you. History is too complicated to be summed up in a sentence. In my country lots of Pakeha (NZers of European descent) claim that Maori are usless doll bludgers (social benefit collectors) and other quite unfair stereotypes that they are lazy, but really it is more a social problem caused by injustices of the past. Meanwhile Maori think that Pakeha are a bunch of theiving colonists who stole all their land and destroyed their culture, this is also untrue. But neither sides really bother to learn their history. It is so frustrating.

In reply to: The United Kingdom consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, although they all have their own parliment they are all interlinked with England. Man I explained the United Kingdom clearly enough above, and if you'd read it you'd know you've got it wrong. Well you right about your first sentance, but...1. They do not all have their own parliament, only England and Scotland do. N.Ireland and Wales have an Assembly.2. We are not "interlinked with England" We are all intelinked with GREAT BRITAIN or the UNITED KINGDOm there of, which is a very important difference and saying otherwise will upset those of us from the non-English constiuent areas of the UK.

Why do you call white New Zealanders "pakeha"?
And indeed all colonial history is shrouded in revisionism and political correctness which has polarised the arguement into two camps, for and agaisnt, when infact the truth is not simply black or white (you could make a pun out of that).
I'm curious, had you ever noticed how the first settlers of Australia and New Zealand are called "First Australians/New Zealanders" when they are cultivating land, building cities, or writing literature, but called "British" when killing natives? -
BOOGIEI just recieved an e-mail from the college saying I have an interview sometime in march. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!I was quite worried cos the course is apparantly very popular. Of course I'm not in it yet.

Nice! And I'm sure you'll interview well. They'll be looking for people who are motivated but level-headed.

And just where do the soddy Irishmen fit in to this lovefest?
-
Northern Ireland is a consituent part of the Unied Kingdom just like Wales, England and Scotland.Southern Ireland, the Irish Republic decided to leave the United Kingdom 1922. The North chose to remain because of being inherently British rather than Irish, being the same religeon (largely) and infact being decended primarily from British settlers to Ireland.

Well the word Pakeha is also shrouded in mystery and controversy. There are many theories about its origine. Some include it being a Maori word describing mythical white skinned creatures, or to the other extreme "white pork". But nowadays it's just used as a term to describe white New Zealanders. I prefer to use it because I don't consider myself at all European. And no I haven't really noticed this "First New Zealanders" and "British" thing going on. But it's actually a fair point, individual settlers who elected to leave Britain for a better life were the ones who set up towns etc... and it was the British army who tended to kill natives (moreso in Australia than in NZ, the vast majority of Maori deaths were caused either by disease or by their own hands using muskets). I could go on about this stuff for hours... but I won't.
