I colourd Lord Francis Drake black once, no harm done. It was back in grade 3 when we were learning about the greatest tactions and explorers. I coloured Jimi Hendrix purple once, now that was a bitching from the black guy you'll never forget!!

Wel I wasnt too sure about your school, being in Florida ( or where ever you grew up at, I only knew of her in Utah.I know we learned jack shit about blacks aside from they wre slaves, now they are not, Lincoln was the president that freed them.We quikly glanced over Clara bartons role, Eli Whitney, and the underground railroad. I learned that they originally came from Africa on slave ships. i learned that there was a entire black company in the civil war. and of course about geroge washington carver. That entire experience of learning was covered in about a week, maybe two.Later on I studied Martin Luther King, but I use studied very loosely, his entire life we summed up in a matter of 2 days or so in US history. I actually learned mor about it from my love of boxing and of Ali, then i ever did in school.Ill make no secret or fight over the fact that im pretty daned ignorant over the major roles of anyone black, aside form those we have discussed, and even those, Im only slightly more then aware of who they were and why they were important.I suppose I have only myself to blame for not knowing mor outside of the classroom and bettering my education on my own, but until recently, I havent really given a shit.In Utah, from my birth till about 4th grae when I met a back kid at school, I didnt even know that blacks existed. My first clue was when I was mae to sit with my parents and watch Alex Haileys Roots, being a young and dumb kid, all that did was teach me the word nigger. Aside from my childhood buddy that was black, whom I may add I still talk to today, up until hurricane katrina brought the refuges to Utah, I have only seen maybe less then 2 dozen back people in my life in this shitty state I live in.fin teh small town I grew up in there was my buddy and by high school there was one other black family living there.I didnt get a real taste of any different cultures until i got old enough to start traveling on my own and headed to the midwest, the northern most section of "Down South" and finally back east.I realize that im the only one to really blame for my ignorance, and Im correcting that now, I thank you for the rccomendations, Il look into them and pul up the link you gave and check that out as well.fRealy though, aside form all of that, what im trying to ascertain, is i grew up in Utah, you in Florida, other people on this board in other places. as far as teh unite states goes, is it like this every place? Are we simply denied the subject of the importance backs played in making th world an this country what it is today? Is it this country as a whole that doesnt give a shit and deem it worthy enough to teach ot the youth or is it a more global problem?Earlier we were talking strictly racial pride, we since have decided that its ok to have cultural pride, but simple race pride is stupid and only shows ignorance. What Im now trying to decide, and I think it has bearing on ths entire thread, or atleast as far as the general US is concerned, is if the US doesnt, or atleast didnt deem them wrothy enough of including in history, or if it was localized to my are of the country. Is it different say in the south where ther is a higher populataion of blacks then here, or is it this way country wide?

Wel I wasnt too sure about your school, being in FloridaExcept for the few small things I mentioned, we learned very little about black history. There's less of an excuse for that here, since there is a large black population. With the no-child-left-behind standardized tests having to be passed, nowadays you're lucky if a public school teaches anything beyond math and English.> Are we simply denied the subject of the importance backs played in making th world an this country what it is today?I'm not sure that it's a global problem, but I'm pretty sure it's like that in most American public schools. I don't know what's going on in the private schools. If South Florida is a good example (and it's not), then it's not much better in the South than it is elsewhere.> we since have decided that its ok to have cultural prideI didn't say that it's OK or not OK, but it's an interesting discussion.> but simple race pride is stupidThat's hard to argue with.

my teachers always get really stiff when they talk about slavery or black history. My teacher said before when talking about segragation "besides, how bad would life be without Shantel, Alyssa, and Abi if they weren't in our school" lol she meant it in a nice way... I think. lol

OK or not OK to have cultural pride is all relative.I can alteast understand how someone could have pride in thier culture.

I am not prideful of something I had nothing to do with. I'm proud of my earned GPA in graduate school, not the pigmentation of my skin.
