Hello. I am a 21 year old female with a slight problem. I have been having some serious vaginal itching lately, it is to the point where it is bothersome all day long. The "inners" of my vagina is looking pretty red, and I have been having thick white/light yellowish discharge all the time. It sounds like a yeast infection from what I have looked up, but I know that it is quite possible that it could be something like herpes too. Sometimes it looks like there is a bump or two but I really can't tell. The last time that I had unproteced sex was about 3 months ago, with someone who has claimed that they don't have anything, but I don't neccecasily trust that statement. Is there any really specific symptoms that would help me differenciate between the two to find out what I really have? This whole thing is really depressing me ALOT. Thanks for you time!!

Yeast infection, herpes, or what??????
-
It sure sounds like a yeast infection. There are yeast infection remedies available over-the-counter at the pharmacy, and they are quite safe. Try one. If it works, you're all set...you'll find out fairly quickly. If it doesn't work, then a trip to the doctor is in order. It also could be a bacterial infection, or something else.

i am "ify" about just getting an over the counter remedy however, i mean, what if it isn't a yeast infection? then i've heard that I can just make things worse if I am attempting to treat something that I don't have. Although sometimes I am a hypodriac, ok well I am a hypocondriac alot! But something just isn't right in my case......Also, I was wondering, if you have herpes, what do the herpes bump really look like? Can you just have one or two small bumps or are they big and painful??Haha, or maybe I am just being paranoid......I mean, since I haven't even had sex in about 3 months, is it quite unlikely that I have herpes? Or can it take that long to show up? Thanks much!

i am "ify" about just getting an over the counter remedyPlease don't generalize. The treatments for yeast infections are safe and effective.> i mean, what if it isn't a yeast infection? Then you're out the price of the medication. It's not that much, in the scheme of things.HSV info: Genital Herpes - CDC Fact Sheet The initial herpes breakout is usually a couple of weeks after exposure. You might just be better off going to the doctor, for your own peace of mind. But it sure does not sound like you have herpes.

do yeast infections ever cause any type of bumps or sores? because it seems like i have a few small bumps, just kinda clearish, very small....what do you think??
-
They can cause small bumps. I don't know if they would be clearish or not. Does it smell kind of like bread (which gets it distinctive smell from a different type of yeast)? Is the discharege darker, or greenish, and smell more fishy? Then it's more likely a bacterial infection. Then there's clamydia...
If you haven't seen your gynecologist (or regular doctor) in a while, now would be a good time for a visit. If you find out it's a yeast infection, you will then know how the symptoms manifest themselves in you. It would be a useful visit.

well, i don't know if it smells like yeast or not, i'm not sure what yeast smells like...and i'm not sure about the "fishy" smell either, but it doenst smell the best, i mean, it has a bad odor. The discharge isn't green but it is white and darker yellow and tends to be clumpy.....it always tends to clump up in the folds of my vagina and stay there unless i wipe it out or rinse it away....gross i know, lol. the bad thing is that i have never been to a gyno before. which is bad, i know.....my parents don't know that i have had sex before so therefore there has never been a need to visit the gyno.....and i relaly don't need them to find out about everything right now......otherwise i thought about going to a planned parenthood to get tested and bring a friend along.....question: if it is some type of bacterial infection, can it go away on its own ever? or does it go away and then just return again? thanks.

'm not sure what yeast smells likeKind of like bread.> the bad thing is that i have never been to a gyno before. which is bad, i knowYes, that is bad. By the time you start having sex, you should go. You can discuss it with your doctor, but your parents don't have to know. Besides, women who never have sex still get vaginal infections.> otherwise i thought about going to a planned parenthood to get tested and bring a friend alongThat's also a possibility.> question: if it is some type of bacterial infection, can it go away on its own ever? or does it go away and then just return again?Ever? Occasionally leukemia will just go away on its own, but so what? If you have a bacterial infection, it might not go away on its own, and it might cause even more problems. If you have something like clamydia (a different type of infection), for instance, you may compromise your ability to ever have children, if you let it go.You need get off your butt and do something. By now you could have bought an OTC yeast infection remedy and tried it. Tomorrow you either need to get hold of your doctor, or call Planned Parenthood. Stop procrastinating and looking for excuses not to do what you need to do.

i got off my butt and made an appointment. and now i have 2 bumps i think that remind me of pimples.
-
That is good. It will be nice to have an authoritative opinion from a real doctor, rather than folks like us who are making educated guesses without even seeing you. Let us know how it goes.
-
I'd offer to make an educated guess if she'd let me see, but I don't think that's appropriate. HAHA Just kidding.

so what happen??? what was it? all that reading and all that angst and know I don't know how the story ends?!
