Hey all, so earlier today i was doing my MMA class (Mixed Martial Arts) well we were doing some wrestling drills, and during that time i moved wrong or something(it was in the middle of a match so i wasnt really paying attention)when i hurt my left big toe. I noticed it mostly after the match. At the time it looked fine but just hurt really bad. I had to go straight to work after MMA so i didnt get to check it out really until after work which was 5 hours later. I got home took of my shoes and sock and the toe itself was swollen, but the weird thing is, the part that is really swolled and is also redish, purpleish is about half an inch to an inch down from where the toe itself starts.(sorry if thats hard to understand) At first i thought it was just sprained but now im thinking it might be broken, what do you guys think? Sorry again if i didnt explain that very good its kinda hard to explain.

Possible Broken Toe

Even when a doctor can see the thing, he/she often needs an X-ray to tell if it is actually broken or sprained, so I think it's going to be hard to tell from a description. Put ice or a cold pack on it (you should have done that long ago, as it much reduces the damage) and get it seen professionally.

I disagree with the first responce you got.Iv had many broken toes, I mean obviously broken, sticking 90 degrees to the side and rolled over broken toes, nto hairline fractures that may or may not be broken.a professional isnt going to do shit for you.sit down, pack it in ice for a few hours.not solid hours, 15 minutes on and 30 minutes off.then grab the bastard, snap it bakc into place, tape it to the toe or toes next to it, and wait 6 weeks. Thats all a docs gonna do, and hes gonna charge you ahell of a lot for it.Iv set all ym own broken fingers and toes aside from teh first one a doc did. the ones I did are straighter and look better and didnt cost me a fortune.

I agree with Chance (gravitykiller) that you often don't need a doctor to do crap about a broken toe (God only knows how many fingers or toes i've broken), but for the same of not wanting anything bad happen to do due to home helping, see a doc IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY OR INSURANCE. If that would put you in more harm then good spending the money on a doc, snap it back after taking a couple advil gel caps, and tape it together.

Ouch! That is all I gotta say. I have never broke a bone. I have taken some pretty good diggers too. Fallen out of trees, off ladders, down stairs bike wrecks, and been stepped on and kicked by many an animal (horses, pigs, goats, and calves). I'm lucky I guess. Bruising was the worst of it.My kid on the other hand....Well, anyway, to the OP they are all right. You can't know if it IS broken with out an x ray, (unless like chance, it's bent around) and you CAN treat it at home. I would like to add, that soaking it in epsom salts will also help with the pain and swelling.Good luck!

Thanks alot for the replies/advice. I didnt really plan on going to the doc, i figure all there gonna tell me is ice it and stay off it (like most you guys said). Its still red/purple and swollen but i figure its either just really bruised or sprained. I went skimboarding, and had to work on it tonight and though it wasnt pleasent it wasnt in pain to the point where i thought it was broken. It hurts most when i bend it downwards but other than that it isnt TO bad. I actually broke this same foot earlier in the year wrestling (same thing i was doing when i hurt my toe)wrestling/mma doesnt like my left foot.
