Like I said, it's not the right way to act. I think it's enough that you understand why people have the reactions they do. We as the minority race need to be not so quick to jump to our fears of racism, as counterintuitive as that be may for us. You, as the dominate race, need to understand why we don't, or aren't, always able to meet that standard.
All you can do is do your job.
All I can do is give the reason why and try to hold my own preconceived notions and temper in check. For now I think it's enough that we seek to understand one another better. Then grow from there.
