USA is trying to improve it's image. We want to look good for the rest of the world. Before, it didn't really matter. The past mentality must have been: Why try to look PC during Christmas when every other day there were lynchings and police blasting fools with firehoses."Now, racism is burried deeper. What's left on the surface that needs a makeover? Our holiday traditions.

That's my problem as well Lisa.
When I taught pre-school one of the little girls was a Jahova Witness. For Halloween and Thanksgiving we had to remove her from the main room and take her to a side office room where she spent most of the day so we wouldn't offend her and her parents beliefs. We even had to tone down a lot of the celebrations because the parents were throwing a fit.
But when Christmas came around her parents tried to force us not to celebrate Christmas with the whole class because they said they were tired of their daughter having to be removed from the rest of the class, and tired of their daughter being subjected to our "horrible" (their words) holiday. We almost lost all the Christmas celebrations that year because of the one child. But we teachers put our foot down and simply told the parents we were not going to spoil Christmas for the children, and just not to worry about bringing their daughter back to school until after Christmas if they didn't wish her to be moved to a seperate class room. Needless to say they didn't being her back until January.
In this scenario it just wasn't fair to spoil the holiday because of one person.
And when I go to a store and they say Happy Holidays to me as I am leaving, I always reply with "Merry Christmas" with a smile and walk out. The year before last Adam and I went and bought a real Christmas Tree and the guy at the tree farm kept calling it a "Holiday Tree" and I kept correcting him by saying Christmas Tree.

I think it's easier to say...Happy Chrismahanukwanzakah!

Not really at you Eddie.
It makes no sense to me either way. If a Jew is going to be offended by someone saying "merry christmas" or a christan by someone saying "happy holidays", I say their reaching to be offended.
They need to take a lesson from their kids at Halloween parties (banned by Christens) or Christmas parties (banned by atheists) and just enjoy each other and have some fun, whatever lexicon of good tidings is used. In other words, grow up.
Rather than learning and appreciating the differences that make us one, we focus on those same differences as a means of segregating ourselves. Meanwhile, somebody is being tied to fence post and beaten to death for their sexuality or someone is being denied a job for their race or "let go" because they got pregnant or someone caps themselves because they are made to feel like they belong nowhere in this world. But, those offensive things are for the rest of the year. This season lets everyone be offended by a friendly greeting, offend by a stranger they'll more than likely never see again.
"Happy Holidays", "Merry Christmas", there's something to be offended about.
On second thought Java, I don't think I like this season.

Well said Scotty.I am certainly not offended by people saying "Happy Holiday", I just simply prefer to use "Merry Christmas" hehe. But this is still one of my favorite times of the year. You just gotta learn to ignore the ignorance and enjoy yourself

Very true. All the same though, I think I'll stay in the woods with the wild animals... where it's safe.

Quote: I never once heard of this being an issue until the religious right made it one.Oh, same here. I live in Georgia and I never heard many people complain about it. I've also never seen any news reports about people "bucking the trend" until the religious right brought up the issue.Maybe some saw a few stores say "Happy Holidays" and blew it out of proportion...

I'm not offended when someone says Happy Holidays to me. I am offended because I feel I cannot say Merry Christmas anymore. Hell, even the anti-Christ himself, SteveA says Merry Christmas. I miss Steve. :frowning:

Why are you guys coming down on A.W.? That doesn't seem very a2aish of you two. nvm, what the hell does that mean. He's got the right to believe what he wants, as do you, so leave him alone, and what the hell is nvm?

Who says you can't say it? Does anybody berate you when you say it? Offer it up in friendly manner and everybody else be damned.I say, if someone gets offended or upset by someone offering a friendly "Merry Christmas", that's their problem. They may make a correction by saying their Jewish or something to which one can offer a "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings", but who cares, as long as the sentiment of good tidings and friendliness is passed along. Isn't that what it's supposed to be about anyway?I hold that the converse is also true. If I get upset, put out or offended by someone offering me a friendly "Happy Holidays", that's my problem, not theirs. The sad part is that the special well wishes are being set aside, or even missed, to focus on the nomenclature of their, claimed, divisive articulation. I find it a somber, disheartening, fact that we would rather argue and find a reason for soured hearts, than to simply accept the affirmatory cordiality of a friend or stranger.

Who's trying to take away your right to say "Merry Christmas"?
-
The reason for most of the major wars we've had is due to religious differences. IT'S BULLSHIT. I don't want that here. Leave that to the fuckfaces who run things.Fairy in the sky? That's a load of SHIT. Only fairies believe in fairies, bob.

A.W.: I'm very sorry for my comment, it was rude and totally uncalled for. I don't know why I said it. Again, I'm sorry. Merry Christmas.
