you got to be kidding me. I'm a 17 year old girl from the ghettos of the Bronx with crazy jacked up friends and I listen to New Age music, Traditional Japanese, Maori, and Irish Gaelic music. lol Just because I like RAP considering it's what most of my family and friends listen to doesn't mean I don't "open up" to other music. pffft. I'm the "Becky" of the group you don't have to tell me twice.

How can a person open up to something they don't even know exists? But my point was not aimed specifically at you...you just happened to be the one to push my button. I can't stand the modern music business...it's all about money instead of music. It's what happens when suits figure out how to make money pushing what's easy for them to produce rather than having the need for any real musical talent.

the business of music isn't all that modern an invention Quote: I guess I'll have to watch witht he sound off.but then you won't hear me scream!

We've always had manufactured bands like Meneudo and The Spice Girls...where talent was at a minimum. But there used to be a seperation between the radio stations and the recording business that was a healthy thing. Now it's gone. Now companies can push whatever they want to...which is always what's easiest to produce. Real talent is hard to find (at least for the mooks who can't recognize it when they hear it), but it's easy to just manufacture something. Most bands these days are a lot closer to Milli Vanilli than it would seem most folks are willing to admit. And since folks will go out and buy only what they know (have been exposed to), they can feed us what they want us to buy through their controlled broadcasting...they control what we're exposed to! Out with the talent, in with manufacturing...it no longer has anything to do with listenable music.I like music...a lot. I listen to just about everything but RAP and country music. Jazz, classical, rock...you name it. But finding something produced in the last 10 years that's worth listening to has become nearly impossible. I always turn to older acts that are still producing material...but in another 20 years most will be either retired or dead. Besides, I like finding something fresh. It's just not looking good.
the 50s, 60s and 70s were full of manufactured bands too (Monkeys, Sex Pistols, etc) that have become clasics in the history of music. Don't get me wrong, I can't defend the lip-syncing pablum that is spoon fed to us as pop music. I'm just saying that it's not new phenomina.I have to admitt that I find myself going back to some older bands at times. Last week I went to a "Monsters of Metal" concert wich was a b/d present from my sister. It was more nostalgic than anything but it sure was fun and the music was really live (Testament, Motorhead, Heaven & Hell, Judas Priest)I have tickets for 2 shows in September; SNFU and Bad Religion. Again, no one new thereWe have Die Mannequin playing at our roller derby fundraiser on Saturday night. They're a young, hard hitting indie band with a sexy, raspy female singer.Bottom line is that music is purly subjective and whatever stirs our emotions is "the best song ever" so that's pretty hard to despute.

I agree with your take on the modern music biz 100% Thor. Where I don't necessarily agree is on the lack of good music produced in the last 10 years. I have no difficulty at all finding great new music. You just have to look in places other than Top 40 radio and the cd bin at Wal-Mart. Folks like Josh Ritter, Damien Rice, Over the Rhine, Arcade Fire, Ellis Paul, Patty Griffin, etc. and so on. Once you start finding it, and finding out where to find it, there's plenty to be found. And the more good folks like you find it and buy it, the more of it there will be. (My...that sounded like an advertisement, didn't it?)
Is it possible that you listen to those bands more and like them more because you were exposed to them more during a time when you were developing your character moreso than now? I know there are things that I like that I did when I was a lot younger that I don't think I'd be interested in if I hadn't been exposed to them before and created a higher opinion of them when I was younger.
I don't mean to answer for Thor, but that doesn't ring true at all for me. I really think it's about perspective. This is really gonna sound condescending, and I apologize for that, but folks who are older (30's, 40's & up) grew up and came of age at a time where top 40 music and music on mainstream radio was...well...better. I mean musically better. I regularly listen to the old AT40 broadcasts from the 70's and 80's on XM radio and I find myself constantly amazed at the difference between then and now. I'm like "Wow! This is what 14 year olds listened to then." So it's not just about being exposed that at an earlier age. I was exposed to that at an early age, but I still expose myself to all kinds of music today. I know what you mean by A Milli. And the old stuff is better.
In fact, I could say that youth today lack the musical perspective that folks like Thor and I have and others here have. (I know that's not gonna go over well here, but it is what it is.)
well, aren't we all starting to sound like.... OUR PARENTS
Y'know, the older I get the less I mind that. Not that I'm ancient or anything.
hehewell, I'm older than you and my mom still hates my music

Well, it was a lot easier when I lived in the big city. Most larger cities will have Adult Alternative radio stations that play such musicians. I also listen to XM radio, particularly The Loft, and Starbucks XM Cafe. You can also connect to several online radio resources such as Pandora and whatnot. It seems to me that once you start finding these musicians, it's easier to keep finding them.
Pandora's a nice website. Need to use it again since I've been getting bored with my current music :S
