Hey a bit of time ago I started a thread about what places in the US you like, which was very inspiring and helpful for looking at places in your country I'd like to move to. Now I need some more practical advice if anyone has it to give. How does one actualy start the process of emmigrating to America? Anyone had any experiences or know anyone thats had to go about this?I found a wesbite for "Greencards", but there all for marriage, specific employment (in a job for which there is no American available to perform...does it mean fruit picking?), or due to relatives in the country. Theres no greencard for people who just generally want to live in a country with more oppertunity than their own.Any help would be appreciated.

Emmigration to the USA
-
In my community (people from FMR Yugoslavia) there are many hundreds who have immigrated just in the San Diego area. People have come here legally and illegally though all sorts of means... But I have no advice as I never got into their whole process of getting a green card.. I DO know that there is a green card lottery and I know many who came here through the lottery... You apply for a green card lottery and if you get picked.. you're free and clear to immigrate without any dramatics.

Sadly I've just read the Greencard lottery has a diversity criteria whereby a person becomes ineligible if they are the citizen of a country who have already sent 50,000 in the last five years (not counting certain other kinds of immigration such as family-related and employment). The United Kingdom and Poland are the only two European countries currently ineligable! Having just read that it now appears I have just two options unless someone sees something I do not. I must acquire a skill America needs (to get a VISA which I MAY be able to upgrade to a Greencard after some time), or marry an American girl.

I know many who have paid good sums of money to get married for papers and then divorced after all was said and done.
-
I'll look around then. Dya think I'll get in trouble if I send messages to random American females on this site asking them to marry me? :pWere you born in the USA? By "your community" you meant your heritage was in the Former Yugoslavia, or just the area you live in?

I was born here but my parents and wife are from Serbia...I'm not a big socializer, but all of our friends/aquaintances or people we visit with are Serbian. That's our "community" including those we know through the Serbian Church here. Our churches are much more than "just" a church.. they are our social centers.

Theres no greencard for people who just generally want to live in a country with more oppertunity than their ownThis is generally true in the U.S. To my knowledge, it is very difficult to emigrate to the U.S. just because one wants to. I had some friends from Sweden who wanted to do this and eventually just gave up. And they were both college professors here on a temorary basis. Having an in demand work skill is a different story, and no, that's not fruit picking. Certain kinds of professions like engineering and some medical fields including nursing can get entry. I would be very careful about trying the marriage route. That is very highly illegal and could cause a lot of problems other than just immigration ones.

Rather than going hunting through the governments shit, find an Irish immigrants group in the U.S. They will probably be the best equipped at getting you the information you seek and can point to loop holes that no one else is aware of and the government wouldn't tell you about.

LOL but it happens all the time... Successfully too. -
Isn't the worst you just get sent back?I know several places have tried to enact legislation that would make an illegal have to do time in a US prison. I don't know who wants to pay for it and don't think that kind of thing has gotten very far because of that.

The World Economy isn't doing too hot, which could be considered a good (impact of globalization) or a bad thing.
