Wow you brought back an ancient memory to me. When i was a teen I played around with mandolin, and I actually also had a mandolin-banjo, though I always called it a banjo mandolin. My grandfather gave the ancient thing to me and I had a new drumskin installed on it and fixed it up. It had a really unique sound. I haven't seen or even heard of one since then.

I actually aquired one of his banjo's a year ago, and still plan on learning how to play it :). Though finding music and instructions on a 4 string banjo seems to be hard to find

Personally it's hands-down wam bam mandolin. My grandpa plays it. He had a really old one, from the 50s or 60s and it was really out of tune and old so I gave him a new one for Christmas last year. He sounds so amazing now. Well, this is my own sentimental reason. If you haven't already, you should listen to both and decide which sound it is that you prefer. The banjo [a four string, by the way, in this video (in case somebodys interested )] or the mandolin. I thought these were two pretty good recordings, and for anyone not wanting to click the link, the banjo guy is playing 'Mrs. McLeod' and 'Soldiers' Joy' (Scottish songs, or so he says) the mandolin guy is playing 'Here Comes the Sun'. Enjoy!Oh and, whenever I used to play with my grandpa's mandolin, my fingers hurt like, well really bad anyway, but he says you get used to it. And the tips of his fingers are really hard from playing, but he has been playing over fifty years so that's understandable!
