Hi. I just thought I would let anyone that has genital herpes that this is the ONLY thing that has helped me. I've had this for 3 years now. I was on Valtrex(acyclovir) as suppression therapy, & used both topical and pill form during outbreaks, and neither has ever helped. I had frequent, like 1 or 2 times a month, and SEVERE outbreaks. I really wanted to die sometimes. I thought it would never end, and I was almost always in pain. So, I had a really bad outbreak in April last year, and was searching the web. I found this stuff online, ViraDerm, but it was like $100, so I couldn't afford it. So, I checked into the ingredients. The active ingredient is 0.4% Stannous Fluoride. So I tried to find this stuff everywhere, well you can't buy it, because in large amounts it can be toxic if you ingest it. After days of searching, I found out that Colgate sells a fluoride 'toothpaste' for cavity prevention that is 0.4% Stannous Fluoride. That is the ONLY active ingredient in it. I was desperate, I checked online and Walgreens carries it, so I went and got it. It was $15 bucks for a small toothpaste sized tube. BUT, I made sure to get the cherry flavor, as the other option was cinnamon(ouch!). I went home and nervously, I rubbed some into the sores. It burns SLIGHTLY at first, which is what it says ViraDerm will do too, (anyone that has this knows just touching them will hurt anyways)because supposedly the fluoride is going to the nerve of the sores. Within minutes, I wasn't in pain anymore! I applied it a few times a day, when I felt I needed more, for about a 1& 1/2 weeks. My outbreak was getting better everyday. I couldn't beleive I wasn't in pain first of all. But my outbreaks usually lasted at least 2 weeks, at 1 &1/2, it was gone. Now, on the ViraDerm site, it says some people never get an outbreak again after using this. Of course, as bad and as often as I get em, I thought, YEAH RIGHT! I figured if nothing else, it'd help with the pain when I did get em. Well, my next outbreak wasn't until January of 2004! I am not shitting you! I even went off my Valtrex in July, under advice of my Dr, seeing I hadn't had one in a couple months, to see what would happen. When I had the outbreak in January, I could feel it coming, so I rubbed the 'toothpaste' on right away for a couple days. When it hit, I had 2 sores. That's it! My next one wasn't til this past Sunday. I didn't catch this one ahead of time, but I've been using the toothpaste and I still only have maybe 3 sores. It's already starting to clear up. This stuff has saved my life, for real. For 2 years I suffered. Not anymore. And everything has stayed the same in my life(diet, stress, etc.) I guess you could chalk it up to fate, but I don't think so. Even my Dr said when I was first diagnosed, that usually they'll get less often, less intense. But mine got worse everytime. He said, sometimes that happens to people. Well it had to be me right? Anyways, for anyone that other stuff doesn't work on, or gets bad outbreaks, or not even bad ones but frequent, WHATEVER...try it. See what happens. Its only $15, and Walgreens WILL sell it to you without a prescription at the pharmacy. Just tell them you've gotten it before without one. If it works for you, then you have a great thing, if not, big deal, it was only $15. I just wanted to possibly help anyone that was as screwed as I was by herpes. (And no, I don't work for Colgate or whoever owns them.) And remember...get the flavor, not the cinnamon! haha

My GF suffers from the herpes simplex 1 virus and I searched the web for everything then I stumbled onto viraderm and ended up buying it(when I bought it it was $30-40 a tube) but I bought one and it really seemed to help her. Now I know a cheaper alternative. Thanks for the info

In reply to: So, i can put my colgate toothpaste on a pimple and it will help it dry out? Yes. But beware if you have eczema because you can actually burn your skin. If you use toothpaste then put it on there for like 10 minutes and wash it off.

ProblemChild: Thank you so much for posting this information! I, like you, have had recurrent (1 - 2x/mth) outbreaks for more than a year even on 800 - 1200 mg of acyclovir/day! I haven't gotten this yet, but I will as soon as I get a chance! By the way, if anyone out there has genital warts, I know ViraDerm clears them up, so the Colgate stuff may work there too! Good Luck & God Bless You!

Colgate Gel Kam isn't really a toothpaste, it's a preventative gel treatment. Totally different ingredients than "regular" toothpaste, so putting Gel Kam on your pimples won't do squat for em. So don't waste it. Use it where it's meant to be used, your genitals! haha

Thanks for the advice. I don't have bad outbreaks, but it is a pain going to the doctor to get a valtrex prescription everytime I do. My prescription cost $12 and my doctor's visit cost $10! So next time, I'm trying the toothpaste!! It'll save me a few bucks.
