A friend of mine takes ritalin. He has time-released ritalin but he says that when he wants it to work instantly he simply chews the pill and crushes all the pellets
so that they will be released instantly. I wonder is there any risk to this? For example when you crush time-released ritalin and then eat the powder and put it on the tongue
could it hurt the tongue?
I'm not sure but I think I heard that some drugs like cocaine when you snort them thru the nose damage the nose. Could ritalin do the same?

Any risks to chewing ritalin?

Time-released drugs are made that way for a reason--so that not all the medication becomes available to your body at once. It is never a good idea to take any drug in a manner other than what is intended. That is, don't chew a tablet or cut open a capsule unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Otherwise you will be getting too much of the medication at one time, and that could possibly overdose you.

I agree with that.
However if I for example take a time-released ritalin which contains let's say 40mg and releases 50% now and 50% 4 hours later
then it would be the same as taking a 20mg time-released ritalin and chewing it. In both ways you'd get 20mg immediate ritalin.
So it shouldn't make a difference right? -
