ok, I've totally given up on the wireless network, so went out and brought a wired network. I've got both the puters talking to each other, can access files on each from each, but I can't get the laptop to recognise the internet connection on the "base" computer! any idea's????

Networking

What operating system? Did you set up an interent connection for the lap top? Are you running a firewall?
-
running xp with sp2
on the laptop, have got internal modem (currently disabled), ADSL (currently disabled), 2x Bluetooth mobile modem connections (also disabled).
The home computer, xp with sp2
ADSL connection, all working happy no problems at all. Both are connected together using 10/100BT Ethernet.
I can get the two puters to communicate to each other, transfering files and shit, but I just can't get the laptop to recognise the home puters internet connection :scream_cat:

From my intoxicated point of view (I'm sicker then shit right now)
In reply to:
ADSL (currently disabled), 2x Bluetooth mobile modem connections (also disabled).
One of them needs to be enabled.
-
I only have 1 ADSL, I haven't got a router (yet), so have to switch usb connections between puters, the only time I use the bluetooth mobil modem is when I'm at work

Come back on msn

The easiest thing to do is to go get a router if you're trying to share internet connection. What kind of networking device are you using? Switch, Hub, etc? And does it have auto-negotiation? Make sure all wires are straight-through if you don't have a auto-neg device. If you're connecting directly you need a crossover.Make sure your network card is enabled. Renew your IP addy, sometimes laptops automatically disable the network card and it freezes an IP address in there.Renewing IPstart > run > type cmd and enter > type ipconfig /renewIf you want to share internet through a computer you have to set the default gateway to that computer's MAC addy. Then on XP there are a bunch of different hidden things you need to check off that "shares internet connection" blah blah blah. It's a complicated process when you don't have a router. You gave up on wireless? That's okay, wire is faster anyway.

The wireless, I just couldn't get anything to communicate. The laptop was no problem cuz the wireless is built in to it, but the home puter just wouldn't accept it.I was looking through the settings this morning, it looks like the laptop is willing to share the internet connection with the home computer, but the home computer is greedy and doesn't want to play nice. You mentioned about the shared internet connections, I have played, I've had a look around it, but I the way it is written, it looks like it is only for support for outside connections into my puter, not as a network, I'm probably wrong though. The networking kit I've got is a Belkin, if the hub is the thing where lots of connections go in to one box, then that's what I've got. Everything is communicating fine and dandy, it's just the bloody internet connection I want. Main reason being, when fuck-nutz is home from sea and on the puter, I want to get online so I can do my work.

I had a friend in high school that made his main computer act as a router and then spread the internet connection to 3 other computers. I'm not completely sure how he did it.My advice to you is to go out and buy a router. It's quite simple to use, especially the wire routers. I've got a linksys wire router. Why wire? Because I had 2 computers and they were both towers that stayed in the same room... and it's faster. The other option is to go out and buy a SOHO product. This is software designed to share internet connection from the main computer to all the others.

I thought a router would be the case, I'm going to be going over to 2mps connection in the next month or so, I was thinking of going for the router then, just saves pissing about.I've got a friend coming over tomorrow who's just finished studying networking, it's hard to explain what is going on, so I'm hoping that with someone looking at it, might help.tnx anyways

XP home... YUCK!
-
can't afford the pro version but anyways...WOOHOO!!! I did it!!!it was simple really, I reinstalled both computers, opened up all the ports and connected online, started the network connection, tried it and it worked!!!installed zone alarm, the older versions work with the network, but their updated version stops it... haven't figured why, but have reverted to an older version and everything is still working
-
My advice is don't install SP2.
-
well SP2 should make the difference between home and pro negligible (although it already is).

Where I used to work we did a lot of beta testing on service pack 2 and it hindered some of our networking capabilities. We're not sure why, all we know is it did something to make things more difficult to communicate and if we did fix the problem it ran unstable. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it didn't. All we could do is reboot and hope for the best. Isn't it weird how you reboot a machine and something doesn't work so you reboot it again and it does work?I have been told that XP home is harder to network as opposed to XP pro, but I was never given an explanation.
